2017 R6
http://www.cycleworld.com/2017-yamah...-look-aim-expo
Looks sexy. I think it actually looks a little better than the R1. The R1 seems too long to me and slightly off balance. I've been in the market for a middleweight for the next riding season. I was looking at the ZX-6r, 959, and now I'll have to throw the R6 into the mix. |

I'm liking it, personally.
My track bike is a well-sorted 06 R6 and it's fantastic. Having said that, it's fantastic on the track. On the street I'm not so sure. This thing is defenitely in the "sharp weapon" category. It's like the Ninjette in that when you get it singing, it's really sweet. Thing is, you can't really get there on the street. This new one appears to be a nice evolution of a terrific platform. Yamaha really got it right years ago, and have had the good sense to not futz with the bike. Looks like they've done a decent update without trying to reinvent it. That's a good thing. Really like that they just lifted the suspension from the R1 and retuned it for the smaller, lighter bike. No dumbing down. Seat is still very high (850mm = 33.5"), but supposedly they've narrowed it at the front, which should help when putting your foot down on the odd patch of gravel or broken pavement. Ergos are likely to be as they had been, i.e., Japanese sportbike-standard. My bike feels quite compact overall and there's no reason to believe this will be any different. Electronics bring this into line with current industry standard, but it's interesting to note that they don't mention an IMU... which is what makes the literbike rider aids really trick (e.g., lean-angle sensitive TC, wheelie control, etc.)

Honestly if the R6 had not been such a great platform over the years the new one released would be a pretty big letdown. No IMU means basic electronic aids that have been available through ECU trickery for the last couple years and nothing new really. R1 suspension ...... ok whatever but really not a big improvement but it markets nicely in the press docs. And then make it look like the new R1 - not BNG but BNF (Bold New Fairings) lol.
Honestly, Yamaha played the market safe, smart business hand and no one can blame them for that. I just think there were many who were expecting something really new on this release.

It's not surprising that it doesn't have all the technology that the R1 does. 600s cost essentially the same to produce as 1000s, but don't command the same sale price. Lower margin on the R6 means less technology.

I think they did a good job with the update. It will still be the best 600cc on track.
I'm really liking the white/silver and neon yellow rims... |

I'm not very knowledgeable regarding the super-sport bikes but I do know that the R1 has the crossplane crankshaft, do you think that feature will ever be built into the R6?

Cross-plane has benefits in terms of power delivery, but at a price. It requires a balance shaft, which adds weight and impacts power.
Never say never, but the R6 engine is, and has long been, a real winner.

Evolution is good, especially off such a strong platform.
I think the biggest thing is good for Yamaha for keeping the segment alive. Everyone is all doom & gloom about supersports. |

Actually it's just the 600 class that's on the skids. Honda has discontinued the CBR600RR, and I've heard the the Triumph Daytona is also gone.
Superbikes, on the other hand, are alive and well. R1 and ZX10 both got major upgrades in the last few years, S1000RR had a significant refresh recently, and this year the CBR1000RR looks absolutely awesome. Plus the GSX-R1000 major update. And Ducati has been plugging away with new model intros.

As cool as this new r6 looks, it will be a r1m for me.

I'm hoping I won't be tippy toes with the redesigned seat.
Also, they finally added a gear indicator. But where's the fuel gauge? |

I love how it looks. I like the 8% reduction in drag; that's huge.
I'm torn on if I like it. From reading various articles, it feels like they designed new bodywork, slapped a R1 front end on it to reduce the number of model-specific parts between the R6 and R1, and then sent it out the door as a "new" bike. Good, bad, or indifferent, I'm calling this one is evolution rather than revolution. Maybe I'm just being quick to judge. I'll be interested in seeing a comparison to the current offerings from Kawi and Zuki I'll say it again, I how it looks. |

I wanted the new R6 to be a triple. In fact it's the same old engine. But it would have been easy for them to start with the FZ09 motor, destroke it, add titanium valves and high end springs and up the compression to 13.5.
Basically I wanted the 3rd gen triumph 675 motor in the R6 chassis. Would have been a world beater. What they did for the '17 R6 doesn't really excite me. It's basically just new plastics and some electronics. Big deal.

^^^ I know where you're coming from, but that would have required all the necessary testing, certifications, and whatever all else is included with releasing a new engine in a new vehicle. Using the same engine is great for reducing the costs.
I get the feeling this is a "new model" because everyone was crying about how old the R6 was, but it's really just a measure to boost sales and reduce the cost of production. Needing to certify a new engine and redo the tooling to produce it is expensive when they already have a kickass 4 cylinder engine that seems to be fairly bulletproof and well known. |
