Another One Bites The Dust err Road :(

So I went down today I was traveling down a back road around my house (near sleepy hollow for anyone from michigan) and went to turn onto a cross street and hit gravel. The front tire slide out from underneath me at about 15-20mph and slide about 10 feet.

Parts that got damaged (Last Picture Has Blood For Anyone Squeamish):

Major Scartches to the Fairing and front flush mount:

Rear Fairing Small Scratch:

(Crappiest Part) Shift Lever Bent:

Parts of me that got hurt:

My Knee:

I was wearing all my gear but I was wearing regular jeans and not riding pants. My knee was the first thing that hit thats why it was the only thing that got hurt.

All in all bad day... now I have to look around for some new fairings and a shift lever.

probably replace the shift lever and fairing first then replace the cowling and rear faring this winter.

Youch! Glad you're mostly OK. It's just a bike, and can be fixed right back up. And there's a relevant thread that might require your input...

You were wearing most of your gear, not your riding pants. I hope you have learned your lesson.

I always wear all my gear when I'm going to crash.

Knee looks juicy.

Make sure you keep it clean.

It must be nice being able to see the future.

Anyway, I had worse injuries from bicycle accidents almost weekly when I was a kid (I REALLY pushed things!) and I really only have a scar on my chin (stiches... WOOO!), a small scar under my left wrist (looks like a "down the street" suicide attempt except it's only about an inch) and a huge but only barely visible circular scar on my right wrist (hair still grows there) to show for all of it. I never even broke a bone. My baby sitter said that my twin brother and I looked like the most abused and bloodied children she had ever seen... and she took care of foster kids (saw a lot of abuse). That said, the same b***h broke my nose when I was 7 (she still believed in physical punishment).

So, yeah, I wear my riding pants for longer distances but I am usually in my uniform commuting to/from work with gloves, boots, helmet, and jacket 90% of the time. If I'm hitting the freeway or going someplace over ~50MPH, I'll probably grab the riding pants.

Glad you are mostly alright. That is a reason why I wear knee guards under my pants every ride. Your shift lever bent out in a funny way, might be to much deflection to bend it back to normal and it stays strong as before.

The fairing and rear fairing didnt look cracked, you may be able to just sand and buff the fairing to save money cause they are pretty pricey. the shift lever is like 45 bucks oem i think. When I layed mine down I had to replace a left mirror, left foot rest and blinker. I left the fairings with rash and some cracks in em cause I see this bike as a trainer till I upgrade.

As some of the people recommended, I would just repair the fairings cause the ones up front are like $600 which is too much (for me at least). When I get the money to buy some color matched paint from colorrite (that place is freaking expensive) I am going to repaint mine. Might start a thread on repainting them too.

Yes indeed! Dirt adds character too!
All of it shows that you really ride the bike. My friend has a ducati monster and all he does with it is cleaning, polishing and looking. Its a joke.
Mine has scratched fairings and electrical tape reinforced blinker

I am glad you are all right!

Glad YOU are ok. I put a few band aids on my scratched fairings....they're just fairings and they did their job for the most part.

Also...CC gives REALLY REALLY good advice....I have him on my speed dial and he's starting his own talk show soon since Dr. Laura has moved on.

YAY! no more scratches!

But it still needs the turn signal (which i'm just waiting to dry right now) and the shift lever which is on its way in the mail

Also I dont have a picture of it yet but I decided to hang the scratched up fairing on the wall in my garage

I would but its already cracked from being bent, there is no way I would be able to bend it back without it breaking...

Could try putting it in a Vise, then blow torch it... just hot enuff to bend the metal back around its original spot... slowly. Reheat it up and keep working on slowly bending it back! Kinda like a Blacksmith ya see in those movies!

Then Tig weld the cracked area. Let it fully cool. Then use a grinder on the weld and smooth it out. Repaint it with some Walmart black paint, then your GTG!!

Where i work at, i can bring it into the shop and have our mechanic help me out, if i was in his shoes!

*Wear welding gloves, use a big pair of rubber handled Pliers when bending the metal back into place (not your hands).

If you just put the part in a Vise and then started bending it... it will break, like when you bend a paperclip back n forth afew times!

By all means though, heating it up with a torch and slowly bending it back, then allowing it to fully Cool, MIGHT NOT be 100% of the original strenght, but its a Start and CHEAP way to attempt to fix it.

If you did it this way, once all bolted back on, first test ride around the block so IF it breaks you dont got far to walk your bike home!

Right, but the sliders will only protect the plastics in the slowest of incidents. Anything at a reasonable speed is going to tag the plastics anyway, but for no-speed or very low-speed drops they can certainly help.

I did witness another board member's low-speed tipover, where the Intuitive sliders did in fact limit damage to the slider and the bar ends with no plastic damage.
