Lightbulb Does dead taillight bulb affect the license plate bulb?

After riding home on the freeway at night, a kind motorist caught up to me at a light and informed me my taillight was out. Upon inspection at home, he was right. The "running" filament is broken, but the brake filament is intact and working. The bulb for my plate is also out. I've got to run to the store to be ready to go for work tomorrow, but don't want to buy the second bulb if I don't need it.

Will a dead tail bulb prevent the plate bulb from working?

Nope, I think they are just both burnt out separately.

OK; thanks for the reply. I'll pick them both up just to be sure.

Yup, you're absolutely right; the tag light WAS actually burnt out as well (broken filament). It is strange they went out at the same time though.... I remember inspecting the lights about a week ago.

When I got home I discovered the guy accidentally gave me an 8w bulb for the tag light, instead of a 5w bulb. I installed it anyway. Will this be an issue, or can I keep it?

I'd think it would be fine. 5w to 8w isn't going to be significantly different on electrical load, or have any difference on the quality of wiring it needs.

Maybe you hit a pothole hard and busted each lamp's filament? Especially if they were on and hot at the time? Dunno. Replace with LED and you never have to worry again.
