Best way to store unmounted tires?

Just bought a pair of BT-016 tires, but won't be putting them on for a couple of months - what is the best way to store tires? I would hate to ruin a set of tires because of not storing them properly.

There's not much that will ruin them, short of submerging them in acid.

Just sit them somewhere out of the way, prevent dirt from getting inside them and they'll be fine. In this weather, I'd just lay them down in the attic.

I've had a rear tire sitting in my bedroom for at least 6 months now waiting for when I take the old off and get the rim re-powdercoated. I would have kept it in the garage, but I didn't want it to sit in the cold.

Personally, I don't store them outside...always inside (garage). Lay them flat on a sheet of wood (not concrete). Some like to stand them up...hey, whatever makes you feel better.

I have a rear tire for my FJR waiting to be mounted. I keep it in the garage sitting on a cardboard box up off the floor. Every time I got out in the garage to work on bikes, I rotate the tire a 1/4 turn just to prevent flat spotting or absorbing cold. Frankly though, this is overkill as all my bikes are resting on the concrete floor anyway, well, except for one that is up on the center stand. I just try to rotate through the bikes making sure that all of them are being ridden to some degree, especially the two (Ninja and KLR) that have carbs. Cleaning out gummed up carbs is a pain.

Put it in a trash back to keep it clean and put it somewhere out of the way. Cold won't hurt it, neither will heat. Cleanliness just means easier to deal with when you go to mount it.

You're going to want to suspend the tire in the air mounted from 8 or more points. This will keep the tire perfectly round and prevent any warping. You may also want to consider keeping a few small children in the middle of the tire. Their body heat will radiate out to the tire keeping it at an acceptable temperature, further reducing any warping.

Remember, tires are extremely fragile and can deteriorate in minutes under certain circumstances.

It's a tire. It goes through a hell of a lot worse once it's mounted than while it's sitting around. For no more than a few months it won't really matter how you store it.

Frugal Ninja has the answer. Put the tyre in a trash bag. It keeps the dirt away and keeps indefinitely.

Hehehe, that's why I chose "Frugal" as part of my handle here. I figured out long ago that whilst doing things in a very complicated and costly manner was fun, in the end simple and cheap while still being effective was just easier. Call it a form of wallet-laziness.
