a recent adventure

@Racer x - what do you think about this next photo?

looks like piston slapping the head right? we took it apart to examine a light tick when warm and found that.. journal bearings weren't bad enough to feel it. had plenty of power. cleaned everything up reassembled and put different oil in and the tick is basically gone unless you are listening with the stethoscope

Looks like the flame front over the valve reliefs. Is there a mark on the head. There should be a large gap between the top of the piston and head.

yeah the head looked fine thats why i'm confused. have you ever seen a piston with a gap in the carbon build up like that?

ya it is from riding around rich then for some reason it leaned out and took the carbon off. How are the valves on that side?

valves and guides looked perfect actually, seated well, no damage on the valves themselves, and the length of the valve rods were clean and shiny and didn't have any scaring. all valves vs. guides were solid and seemed to be in good shape. intake valves looked dark brown... maybe a little too dark. exhausts looked light tan, perfect color though. only 'odd' thing was a little extra carbon build up on one side of the intake and not so much on the other. now that you say that, pilot system was just ever slightly lean coming down from a throttle blip... i'll tune the pilot air screws and resync the carbs next time i get a chance. i just got a report back from the rider after she took the bike to work today. and after rebuilding everything and switching to a different oil, the sound is almost completely gone.

still not sure what the ticking was, but using the stethoscope (best $3 ever spent on a tool) i was able to tell it was coming from the intake side of the cylinder, which is where those clean marks on the cylinder were.

thanks for looking btw

Could the ticking have been the cam chain tensioner?
