Yep - that's exactly what it sounds like when the battery isn't strong enough to engage the starter. Sound like you got it all sorted.

I rid (rided... road...hm) around for close to an hour to charge her a bit. I do have a trickle charger somewhere, I'll have to dig around to find it.

Sounds good. If you're charging system is reasonably OK, an hour should be more than enough to get the battery back in shape. Battery tenders are never a bad idea either.

Also, now is better than ever to learn how to bump-start your ninja. The beautiful thing about carbs is you can bump start them if the battery dies.

Wait -- that makes it sound like you can ONLY bump start carbed bikes, but I've bump started FI bikes before as well. Is it harder? I don't remember it being hard (the 300 is ridiculously easy to bump start), but maybe they start for different reasons?

I mean I know that some of them can be. I'm not sure my EFI kit can be.
I'm just thinking with a totally dead battery. Like dead dead. I'm not sure if the injectors would fire. Give it a try!! Run your battery to nothing and go at it |

The power required for the EFI electronics and fuel pump etc is but a tiny fraction of what's required to turn over the starter, generally a flat battery isn't flat but just doesn't have enough juice in it to turn the starter motor, so in 99% of cases you can bump an EFI bike, I would also hazard a guess that if the battery is completely kaput, you could power it enough over the alternator to get it going.
I'm not too sure how the starter / alternator works on our bikes, I assume we don't have a dedicated alternator unit, but that's unimportant. I've bumped my EFI ninja for practise, I found 10mph, dump into first and it fires right up' YMMV |

Aw, Jono beat me to it.
Will the battery tender prolong the battery life at all at this point? ps. SCIENCE!... Thanks Travis. The ride through the deserted streets of the national mall/downtown DC was actually pretty nice. if I had one extra layer on, I probably would have stayed out longer.

With the ecotrons EFI kit, a weak battery is more likely to cause a no-start condition long before it goes completely dead. The ECU requires a minimum of about 10 volts and it wont start if it drops below that - even for an instant. If it drops below 10 volts it triggers a reboot of the ECU and that takes about three seconds before it will do anything.
So what this means is that if you have at least 10V while the ignition switch is on, then it is possible to push start. If you have less than 10V, then its pretty much hopeless. The carbed bike has the same problem, but the voltage threshold is lower at about 8 volts. The alternator on the bike will put out an amp or two during the actual bump, but in the EFI case, it needs three seconds just to boot up. So with a completely dead battery, its pretty much hopeless. The exception might be if you were at the top of a long hill and were able to sustain the engine turning over for 20-30 seconds. But even that requires at least a partially responsive battery.

Yeah I've pretty much accepted that I'm screwed if my battery ever dies because of my EFI kit. I'll just have to hope I can find someone with jumper cables if it comes to that.

I had this happen once when I stopped at a store on my 250, turned out it was a loose battery lead and yes you can roll start a FI bike. I just did it last night to my r6.....pushing it uphill....like a boss. Needless to say I got a new battery after work lol.

This may or not be if interest but AMA roadside assistance won't jump a motorcycle. They will tow you though.
