New 2012 but dies in neutral!

Hello everyone, ok so I did a bit of searching to see if anyone else might be experiencing the same problem as me or not.. but I saw some similar problems but nothing like mine.

I bought a 2012 Ninja 250r from a dealership with 2 miles on it. The day I bought her she was all warmed up and ready to ride. (I live in NJ and our weather here has been in the 40's).

Now this is where the problem begins.. I took her out 2 days later and pulled the choke down, turned her on and get her going... Soon enough the rpm's went above 2,000. I lowered the choke a little every time till she was idling around 1,000 to 1,100.... NOW I gave her a little gas and she just died. This happened a few times... It feels like a rough idle or kind of sluggish. The bike is brand new with less than 12 miles on it. I cannot for the life of me figure out what is happening. I called the dealer and he said to adjust the Idle a little higher which i did. But still when i give her some gas she just dies, unless i wait like 10 minutes of warming her up.

I did however take her out and in first gear she didn't quite pull... it was sluggish and felt like she was about to die and all of a sudden POWER and PULL! It's really hard to explain... I will bring her back to the dealer soon when the weather is a little better but wanted to know what I could possibly even do. I will have to ride her to the dealer so I don't want to have any incidents on the road...

Help? Please?

Thanks!

It probably just needs to be ridden. Leave the choke completely on, so it's revving at 3k or more. Engage first gear, and go for a ride. While in motion, start moving the choke down to fully off, but there's no rush. If it takes 3 - 5 minutes of riding, that's OK.

Odds are, there's nothing at all wrong with the bike.

Sounds normal to me. Especially in colder temperature, these bikes like to be warmed up for a good 5 minutes with the choke on. If you're gonna ride off after a minute you'll need to keep the choke on until the engine comes up to normal operating temperature.

My bike did the same thing when I purchased it a couple months back. I just did what has been mentioned riding with the choke for a few and never had any problems once warmed up. Plus if you end up looking through your sight glass and it is foggy inside while the bike is warming up that will go away with the same procedures above.

Definitely sounds like youre not letting the bike warm up enough. I usually ride the first 3-5mins at ~2k rpm idle, adjusting the choke as I go, then close the choke completely. That normally works for me at ~55F.

I used to have the similar problem and a friend is currently having this problem. It's mainly carb icing. The faq above explains in more detail and helps you prevent it from happening. it only takes 70 degrees Fahrenheit for the air to build ice (air flow temp not outside temp). Keeping your bike warm before riding helps.

Ride it like you stole it once you get a couple miles on it. Break in periods are important.

My bike sits in a cozy 72 degree garage and I still had this issue. Definently needs to be warmed up more before you release the choke fully.

OP hasn't been back to the thread since initially posting the question; hope he finds his way back here.

Hahaha, I posted this last night before going to bed and now checking this during lunch, You guys are awesome. I was worried because this is the first time I bought a brand new bike and had this problem. My CBR is usually good to go within a minute or two with no choke.

The dealer has me all scared for breaking in the engine the right way and not letting the RPM's sit too high during idle. (I just checked the site for properly breaking in the engine and it doesn't sound anything like what the manual or what the dealer told me)

I'll try it out with the choke and see how she does.

Thank you once again!

I did this the one time I took it to my campus and with the choke one the bike died at the light as soon as i gave it some gas before even releasing the clutch.

That's why I've been a bit worried. (note: the temp outside was around 40)

I'm in the habit of starting on full choke while I finish putting on gloves, helmet, glasses, etc. by then, it's been a couple of minutes and I can take the choke down and ride. Haven't had any issues through the end of winter in Memphis. Hope you can figure out what you warm up process works best for you soon.

Enjoy the new ride!

FIXED!!

Thank you all! I ended up taking the bike to the dealer and they weren't able to find much they did replace the gas they gave me with the bike and flushed it, and we believe it was just the gas.

Now after 3-5 minutes of warmup in 45 degree weather I am able to ride off with the choke on for the first take off and then I'm good for the ride.

Thank you so much for all the help guys! (You're all awesome!)
