How The Heart Reacts at 200mph

Using sports science technology, three very different riders at the International North West 200 motorbike festival, put this question to the test.

With top speeds hitting 208mph, on closed public roads around the coast of Northern Ireland, the North West 200 is one of the fastest road races in the world. The motorbikes are often just inches from each other.

Three competitors were fitted with a heart strap and wireless sensor to measure their heart rate over every inch of the course.

The riders were 'the Champion' Alastair Seeley, 33, 'the Novice' Gareth Keys, 22, and 'the Veteran' Jeremy McWilliams, 49.


Watch for the dog running out in front of Gareth Keys and his corresponding heart rate spike

I did a test of this last year when I got the chance to ride a superbike in a one off race.

Some history
My resting HR is 37 and my max is 190
Avg for a 5k running race is 188
Avg for a half marathon is 181
Avg for a marathon is 178
Avg for a 100mile ultra marathon is 160

Avg for a 20min superbike race is 185 with a max of 188
Avg for a local canyon session on the 250 is 135

Avg when driving my truck racing cars on the way to a MTB race is surprisingly low at 55

It's to bad I didn't think to monitor this stuff in the past when I was still racing. I find the intensity of your heart beat can change without grossly effecting the rate. What I mean by that is when something surprises you, you get a shot of adrenaline, this seems to make my heart beat with more intensity but has a smaller effect of the overall rate.

I thought I monitored my last Moto mini race so ill take a look and post it if I can find it.

We have a special monitoring device that tracks training effect on your overall health so you don't overdo it. You do a series of standing and laying down at set intervals and it measures you min, max and recovery HR for each set. Min HR is what I get when relaxing horizontally. When I get my HR checked at the DR. office it always throws them for a loop because its normally like 40-42, They always check it twice

Ultra Distance Athletes generally have lower Min and Max HR's do to their style and pace of training. Even though I'm in my 20's I have a HR similar to a 50 year old athlete. When I go running or riding with @CycleCam303 his HR is always 25 BPM higher then mine at any pace.

The general athletic community doesn't give World Class superbike racers enough credit. Having done some of the hardest types of human propelled racing myself, I can tell you riding a motorcycle at 100% for an hour or more is harder then most can imagine.

My half marathon average is similar, around 175-180. Best resting was 58. Distance running is one sport where age is not a hindrance.

I would love to try an ultra one day.

It's not just superbike racers. On any given sunday, somewhere there are average Joe racers doing their 1 hour open practice session before the races of the day. Yea... most don't make it the entire hour but a few do. 53 minutes is my max so far. I might have made the entire hour yesterday if I wasn't running a bit late at registration.

Really interesting video. Thanks for posting it. If I can afford one, I am thinking of getting a heart rate monitor with download capabilities so that I can do something similar during my next Ninja 250 race weekend. Could be interesting.
