A MAN has travelled from Australia to Ireland on a Kawasaki Versys 650 carrying his mother's ashes back to where she was born.

Paul Brown, 51, took a route across Australia, flew his motorcycle to Korea, then rode through Russia and mainland Europe on his way to Westerton, Bishop Auckland in Ireland. The trip took 3 months in total.

Mr Brown's mother, Patricia, was born in Ireland in 1933 but moved to New Zealand in 1961. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2004 and lived with her son until she died in 2012.

Brown said: "Before she passed away from dementia a year ago she just kept saying 'I want to go home, I want to go home', and I sort of came to the conclusion that the best place for her, for her ashes, was back here where she belonged."

Riding with just a sleeping bag, tent, food and drink, Brown said the biggest test was paperwork; visas, insurance and his passport.

Brown said his trip was also designed to raise money and awareness for Neuroscience Research Australia and The Alzheimer's Society.
