New to bikes, have a question
OKay so i just bought myself one of the very fast 2012 ninja 250s for my first bike used. Ive been riding it, it rides fine, but it gets to 80mph and is doing 12k rpm. i have a friend who has a 2007 ninja 250 and his gets to a much faster speed and at a lower rpm and he weighs about the same as me.
Ive read of other people doing much faster than just 80mph and im just curious as to whether its just the newer 250s dont go as slow or if something is actually wrong with my bike? it has 5k miles, i weigh 165, everything else is in good condition other than its needing an oil change soon. I know its just a 250 and shouldnt expect much speed out of it but only 80mph seems like something is wrong to me. Thank you for reading this and replying! I appreciate it. |

Hi and welcome!
Top-speed is all about aerodynamics and how much wind is blocked by your cross-sectional area. That area then bores a tunnel through the wind. The more air volume you have to displace to create that tunnel, the slower you'll go for any given HP-output. So... to go faster for same max-HP from engine, fold in your mirrors, tuck down and behind the wind-screen (chin on tank). Pull in your legs, arms, hands, use your little pinkie-finger to keep the throttle pinned. That's good for at least 10-15mph more. Could also be your bike is out of optimum tune. Or even worn-out and engine needs rebuild. |

Hello Ben, it's good to meet you.
Engine RPM versus road speed in high gear depends only on what particular sprockets the bike has on it. Many guys don't like the high revs at highway speed, and change the sprockets to lower the RPM. Figuring out what sprockets your 250 has might shed some light on the situation. If yours are the stock ones and your friend has different ones, that might explain the difference. Also, speedometers and tachometers are somewhat notorious for being inaccurate, so that may be entering into the equation. Is the rev limiter limiting your top speed, or are you backing off at 12,000? I thought newgen 250 redlined at 13,000. |

higher speed + lower rpm = gearing. Stock 250 should top out around 140kph or 90mph with stock 15/45 (3:1 gearing) you can test this without counting. Drive it at 80kph (55mph) in 6th gear. if its doing 7000 rpm its probably stock. At 100 kph its 8000 rpm. 120kph is around 9800-10 000 rpm.
