Unhappy smoke and burning smell

Good afternoon all, I have not ridden my bike in a very long time, but changed the oil and battery a few months back, so today I was able to get the bike to idle after I brought the rpm's up to about 9k while the bike was in neutral. After that there was noticalbe smoke and a burning smell, then it went away and I took the bike around the block a couple times. Throttle response was horrible, it would make a lot of noise then the rpms would go up and finallly start to move in 1st 2nd and 3rd gear. What do you think it it? Do the carb's need to be cleaned or replaced? Or did the motor overheat?? Clutch?

Did you perhaps get oil on the headers or exhaust piping and thats what was burning off? As for the poor performance cleaning your carb will be good, but carbs might also be Jetted improperly.

How long was it not ridden?
Was the fuel ever stabilized or carbs drained?
Did you use fresh fuel?
You never rev a cold engine that high. What you probably saw and smelled was the exhaust getting too hot and burning any residue on it. Your symptoms are indicative of clogged and dirty carbs. A manual cleaning of the carbs may be in your future depending on how the bike was stored or condition it was left in.

I would guess the bike has probably not been ridden in about 9 months to a year or so. I kept it in the garage the whole time so the elements wouldn't affect it. Well, I was hoping not to clean the carbs and the burning was just excess fuel.............. thanks for the replies.
