What is wrong? Please help!

Okay so not too long ago I went out and bought my first bike, an 09 ninja 250r. When I first changed the oil there was about twice the amount of oil that it was supposed to have in it (maybe not twice the amount but there was a noticeable amount more) I thought nothing too much of it but a little bit into riding I started to notice that there are a ton of false neutrals when shifting at first I would only find them in between 2nd and third but they began to happen between every gear at some point. Also abour three weeks after I had the bike it began to slip into neutral when I would shift to second (it would be in 2nd for about 8-12 seconds) even if I gave it a firm lick up this would happen. Recently when taking off from a stop there has been a sound that is a little off putting when in the lower rpms. It sounds almost like something in the engine is just dropping and hitting the bottom or something like that and I haven't been able to find anything to point me in the direction of what the issue is. Please help!

What condition is the chain in? Is it adjusted properly? Can you pull the chain off of the rear sprocket and expose more than 1/2 of a tooth?

That's the first/easiest place to start.

If that's fine, I would check the adjustment of the clutch cable (https://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Adjust...e_clutch_cable) and shift mechanism. Check that the linkage moves freely, and lube it while you are there.

What oil did you use? I don't expect that the wrong oil could cause the problems, but you want the proper oil.

Make sure you are checking the level correctly - https://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/How_do_I_check_my_oil%3F

More engine info - https://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Engine

If all that checks out, it could be internal transmission problems like taz suggested. Hopefully not.

If it's crazy-loose it could be jumping and making odd grinding noises.

Here's a how-to for chain adjustment - http://www.canyonchasers.net/video/howto/chain.php

Not just loose, but chain may also be worn. Measure wear amount and replace if necessary. THEN adjust chain tension.
