Tire feathering and peeling bad?

That looks dangerous!

What is the manufacture date? It's 4 numbers in an oval on the sidewall like "2608". The first 2 are the week of the year (26th week) the second are the last digits of the year (2008).

Anything over 5 years and you are on borrowed time.

I just trashed a front tire (BT-016 Pro) that was too old, but not "worn out".

Good tires are a must for survival on the street IMO. I'll take every advantage I can get.

Assuming it's not overly old, I'd do some hard test stops and observe how it feels in turns and decide that way. I've seen tires do what your photo shows, but still have excellent grip. Really though don't listen to me, it's your safety in question. As I've gotten older, I worry less about tings than I used to.

Made in 2012 so I'm guessing age low usage weathered and hard riding wjen used. Getting a new bike next week but still using this daily, just noticed that today. I'll probably just ride it home and leave it alone till I can geth new tires. Wasn't sure if that was normal peeling wear or worse sounds like it's worse

A tire shouldn't do that, but the Avon Roadriders on my DT100 have a little of it starting. They still stick like glue though, so I'm not throwing them away.

that spot in the picture, are they at intervals all the way around the tires ?

it aint that deep yet, if the cracks get below the wear bars or shows any signs of less than optimal traction... replace the tire

I'll check, is thathere bad? I don't believe it's ok to ride going further but if others say it's ok I'll let it hang for rest of the season

I have meet and rode with all kinds of riders. If you have no faith in the tire, then it WILL show in other areas of your riding.

Replace it now if that puts your confidence back where it needs to be.



EDIT: Your direct question "is that bad?" Of course that is bad, your tire should NOT wear in that manner. It is showing signs of drying out and age.

You are not going to get definitive answers - just opinions.

I'm picky about tires, on my cars but especially on my cycles. I've replaced new OEM cycle tires after 500 mi because I didn't like them. Others have ridden on them for 10 years or more. I've replaced car tires after 3 years because traction had degraded past what I thought was acceptable.

As I get older I get less likely to accept anything I see as a potential problem or unacceptable safety risk. There are enough risks out there that I can't control, so I minimize the ones I can. It's kept me alive for over 35 years on 2 wheels, so far...

Ah ok that'she what I was looking for, what it means. So basically all the oils are gone from age. So yea time to dump them. Riding home then new tires next week.
