Is thirst a huge issue, can't you stop and grab a drink from a bottle every hour or so? I am a new rider and haven't started riding yet but was just wondering.

Uhh, I just got a $20 backpack from Wal-Mart and added the $10 hydration bladder that was made to fit in it. How is this "cheap?!"

You can do the stop every hour or so and drink from a bottle, some riders just want to spend some $ that they will look for something to buy every now and then(It's like an addiction). I actually had one of those thingymagiggers before(Got a small one from wallymart), If I know it's hot out and I want to keep myself rehydrated every now and then I would fill the thing with an "electrolyte" drink and then go. It's a very convenient way to get rehydrate. it's also very useful on group riders where I don't have any control when we're gonna stop to take a rest. It's a very nice thing to have, but I would invest in some protection first before this.

Bass Pro Shops sells a RedHead brand 2L bladders for 12.99. I've got several of them I've taken on hiking/biking trips and they hold up well. Throw a denture cleaning tablet in there with some water to clean it out when your done and then just rinse it and store it with the cap off.
