Front/rear sprocket combo

I did a search but I couldn't find the right answer. I would like to upgrade my sprockets, I'm looking to get more hump, don't really care about top end since I ride under 80 mph. But at the same time would like to lower the rev.

Thanks in advance for any help.

My bike has around 9k miles, should I replace the chain also?

Thanks for the quicky!!!

If by "hump" you mean more response in any
given gear, that is physically at odds with wanting to lower RPMs in any given gear... Though, understand the only real difference is off the line. Past 30mph, it won't really make a difference in how much pep the bike actually has except how many times you've clicked the shifter to get there.

There are some threads about both going longer and shorter than stock. I think I'd lose my mind having to be in 4th

I wanted to say peppy, and yes, to get more response in any
given gear, just want to lower the rpm's on 6th gear for the interstate.

I'm a good diy'er but never worked with gears before, so I really don't know what I'm talking about when it comes to gears.

thanks for the links.

select 2008 ninja 250r from the drop and then click "load gearing"

you'll have 3 options displayed:

stock (130/70/17 tire, 14 tooth front, 45 tooth rear)
current (150/60/17 tire, 14 tooth front, 45 tooth rear)
custom (150-60/17 tire, now you can play around with the front and the rear sprockets)

the main sections to look at are Speed in related to Gear and RPM and RPM differences due to drive train setup change.

keep in mind you have to click on the stock, current, of custom icon to load the info into the tables

for example:

stock setup at 8000 rpm will get you about 104.5 km/h (65mph) in 6th gear
your current setup - 109.3 km/h (68mph)
someone mentioned 15/42 - 125.4 km/h (78mph)

and

at 120 km/h (75mph) you be turning the following rpm:

stock - 9186
your current set up - 8785
15/42 - 7653

the taller (bigger front, smaller rear) your gears, the longer you'll be in each gear when accelerating (don't have to shift as quick)

most common change in gearing is upping the front to 15 and leaving the rear at 45, which will get you this:

8000 rpm - 117.1 km/h (73 mph) in 6th
8199 @ 120 km/h (75mph)

keep in mind your speedometer wil indicate you're going faster do the inherent 10% error

hope this helps

My mind works best around numbers, so I pretty much have the gearing commander open in a tab at all times :P . GREAT site. And in my above post, I think I was going to say I'd go crazy having to be in 4th at 8k before I was passing a 40mph speed limit, but I guess I hit submit mid-thought :P . In any case, it is completely subjective.

I was riding around today, enjoying my bike, despite my gearing being 25% taller than stock I still find first 1st gear a little unexciting. For me, 2nd gear is where the fun starts, as I pass about 10k and can really make my way around a cage or two. Third is more for just getting on the highway for me, as it takes me past 80mph now.

And yes, I am still considering going to a 37t rear with my 16t front if my bike starts performing as I thought it would. 1st would take me to 50mph at the stock redline > .

As far as I can tell the limiting factor on our bikes is HP. Gearing will lower Rpms if it annoys you but from all I read it's more preference. HP mods are the ones you should look at if I understand what you want from your post correct. Jet's, exaust and air system mods I think will be the best place to start

And I agree, that though while significantly more complicated and difficult to get right, mods will go a lot further to getting you more pep from a practical perspective than reducing gearing. But, even just shimming the needles and playing with the mixture screws is free, will take you maybe an hour or two longer, and will get you a VERY noticable improvement in low- and mid-range pep and response. In one of those threads I'm sure I mentioned it, but getting the needles and mixture screws right is what made the difference between bogging until 15mph (4krpm on my bike) and pulling smoothly from 5mph (1500rpm).

JMcDonald every time I read your post, it makes me want to try out the 15/41 setup on my bike... I just put the 15t on, and I love it so much more than stock...I think if the 15t is this great, the 15/41 will blow me away...

Will a 15/41 require a new chain, and what???

Gearing Commander!

Toward the bottom, it will tell you how much further back the rear wheel will need to go. Mine had about an inch or so of room to slide, but only needed .4" for the 16/41 . A 15/41 combo is about .5" longer than stock for sprocket distance, and should be doable. Just check to make sure first that your chain isn't particularly stretched.

14/42 would be identical to 15/45 - so 14/44 or 14/43 would be in between (dropping revs and spending a little longer in each gear before needing to shift compared to stock).

moving to a 44 or 43 in the rear will have no significant effect on the chain.
