Upgrading Dilemma

Ok, I wanted to get some advice of those of you in the know, lol. Ive decided to upgrade to a YZF-R1 from my lil ninjette. I have a guy at work who has two R1's a 2003 and a 2008 and he needs to sell both of them to cover some debt. Problem is he doesnt know what he wants to get out of them and just wanted me to throw out a fair price. My budget is 6k but Id like not to spend all that on the bike as I'll need to pay tag fees, tax and inspection fees not to mention upgrading my insurance.

The 2003 (the one I really like) has new Pirelli Diablo tires. 13,000~ miles and has been dropped on its right side. it has scratches on the lower fairings. He has an extra set of fairings for it but they need to be repainted. He also has an oversized rear tire on it that im not real fond of but I guess would be nice on the highway. It has a Muzzi slip on and it sounds very nice. Oh yea, it has a fender eliminator, flush turn signals and LED's for tail light and turn signals.

I offered him $3,800.00. Im not great on estimating value on bikes as Ive only been riding on the streets for a season and just recently interested in street bikes. (Raced MX 1/2 my life).

The 2008 has new tires, not sure what they are.. some kinda Bridgestones. He has 4,000~ miles on it. It too, has been dropped and has scratches on its lower fairing as well as the gear casing. They arent bad but they are there. It has the same mods as the '03

I threw out $5000.00 for it. I know thats low, but I explained my budget.
Niether bike has been rode in quite a long time and the 03 had some rust on the chain

I looked both bikes up on KBB and Nada and from that I think my offer on the 03 was spot on but my offer on the 08 was lowballish. My question to you guys is...Do yall think what I offered was reasonable ? This guy that owns them said he would do some research and ask his brother. then get back with me tonight with what he was gonna sell them for.

any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Find what the same bikes are selling for in your area. Then deduct the price of fixing them. Then deduct for you having to do the work. Then deduct for the taxes and registration. Then show him how you came up with the price.

+1

I wouldn't go over $4k for that 2003...even if it WAS in better condition

If you can land that 2008 for $5k then take it. That's a damn good deal haha.

Perfect 2009 R1 with 800 miles and frame sliders went for $8K not too long ago at dealer, so that bike sounds closer to 5K than 8K.

Your friend like dropping R1's? I would have offered $3.5K on the 03 and $4.7K on the 08. Good luck

Funny you say that. When I went to his house, his driveway is really steep and both were dropped walking out of the garage. At least that's what he said. I heard the 03 was dropped on a parking lot while he was doing wheelies.

Thanks everyone for your input. I'm gonna stay firm at 4k for the 03. I'd Love to get the newer one for 5k tho.

Keep these bikes in mind but don't tie yourself to them. Look around and keep your options open. You may find a better deal or a better condition bike for a similar price.

P.s If this guy has been poppin' wheelies, I wouldn't want his bike. Think of all the clutch dumping and misuse. If he had to replace his tires in 4000 miles, he may also be doing burnouts.

If the gear casing is scratched, you can tell how badly it was dropped. Just a hint
