issue adjusting the valves

The wiki is great, my bike has been giving me a hard time during cold starts. Ive already completely rebuilt the carbs. With 18k miles I figured it'll be a good idea to adjust the valves since I have no idea when the previous owner did it last.

So I proceeded to adjust them from the left to right and the last valve intake right cylinder didn't have a nut on the valve adjustment screw. Also with the adjustment screw backed up all the way I still can't get the feeler Guage in under the cam. The rest of the valves are fine. I've put 1000 miles on the bike to date. Do I need to rebuild? Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks

The follower has to be on the heel of the cam lobe. If it is, and there is no clearance, you have problems.

Yes its on the heel. I guess I need to yank it and rebuild. Any recommendations on a rebuild kit? Might as well replace the pistons and rings. Anyone make higher compression pistons for these?

Depends on what your planning to do. I would look at the input cam for problems. If none found I would pull the head and look at the problem valve. If it s a valve problem, I'd go with that and nothing else. But, that s just me.

As an additional comment l would say that as easy as the motor is to pull,I would pull the motor before I pulled the head?
