Greetings from Toronto

Hello all,
Had a fun day today.
I did my safety course 2 weeks ago and picked up my first bike today, a beautiful red 2012 250r.
Was a bit nervous but it passed quickly and i had a great time riding around for 2 hours.
Then while turning left at an intersection i was rushing a bit just because i had been waiting for so many cars to come through. Had a gap. A large gap. Anyhoo, somehow i wasnt turning enough, then opened throttle too much by accident (seems to be an issue for me), and i was headed straight at the curb. I must have made a few mistakes at that point, grabbed brake, fixated on curb, and maybe even turned the bars to the left.
Low side. Shoulder first. Gear lever snapped right off, turn signal, and small crack in the fairing. Should be repairable.
Unfortunately i broke my collarbone right through and im in a sling for weeks. Hoping it heals properly. Cant drive so my weekend job is out for now. Costly mistake

I think i rushed getting on the road. Should have stuck to parking lots for a while but i needed to drive the bike from the dealer and it was a long ways from my home.

Need to learn from this hasnt deterred me from wanting to ride, yet.

Cheers,

Colin

Ouch! I'm glad it hasn't dampened your interest in motorcycles. As far as traffic and gauging gaps and all, patience is your friend.

Personally, I take encouragement from the fact that a large portion of crashes are caused by rider error, and a lot of that is under my control. So as long as I'm careful, I am hoping to not crash any more. I've done one, and it was my fault.

But I do agree, parking lot practice and lesser-traveled roads will be helpful to you while you get used to the bike, and how things feel, and what you need to do when. It was a few months before I was getting onto the freeway, until I was comfortable enough to do it. Also, if you know someone who's an experienced rider, it's helpful to have a mentor who can ride with you sometimes, give you advice about how to handle the bike and traffic.
