10 car pileup

Link to original page on YouTube.

Drive thru this area alot, actually went right thru here the next morning on the bike on the way to NYST. They had it all cleaned up by then but that wouldn't be something I'd want to see in my mirrors. This area has been under construction for almost ever.

They showed this on the evening news. Four brave men saved an old lady trapped in that burning car.

Those men did a courageous and beautiful thing. The preparedness of whoever had that fire extinguisher played no small role in saving that woman's life too.

You will NOT understand how hard it is to break a car window until someone is burning behind it.

A similar thing (burning car) happened not far from my house a few years back, she didn't make it despite 2 broken hands trying to bust the window. Car tech is both good and bad sometimes. Of course when you start rolling, the car/truck auto locks the doors. Now... someone please send auto manufacturers an email to put in a smoke or temp sensor, so if the car is on fire, the doors unlock.

Watching someone burn to death is some of the stuff nightmares are made off.

Its NOTHING like you see in the movies. That one shot quick break stuff is complete and utter **** compared to the real world.

Windows are tough! I've seen police officers smack it a half dozen times with an ASP baton and nothing happens. Need a sharp pointed tool and PRESSURE.

Yikes.

It's true that car windows are tough. We just got the little window-breaking hammers, one for each car, with seat-belt cutters. Hoping they never get used. Windshield and back windows might be easier to break than a side window; you can get more force on it between the point of impact and the edge of the glass.

Makes me wonder. Many of us wear belts w/ metal buckles. Maybe whipping a window would readily break it?
Another solution may be to take off the hood prop if you have an older car and start beating on the glass with the hook.

Also, don't be trying to get through the windshield, it's laminated and will be pretty much impossible to get through without cutting/chopping tools.

The cheap pot metal of the buckle is more likely to break than a window.

If you want to keep something with you that will work and is easily portable, get a finish nail driver. Or a spark plug....the broken ceramic, when thrown hard at a window, will break the tempered glass.

I've cracked my old cars front windshield by throwing my phone at it while I was driving. Lets just say I wish it was the person on the other end of the call at that time.

I think preparedness is extremely important and can save lives. Also: it's often easier, more pleasant and cheaper to prepare than to not prepare.

I think because so many have comfortable city-lives now, they are not forced to familiarize themselves with preparedness. Almost anything you need can be summoned very quickly and cheaply, so the idea of preparing can be foreign to many. I still think it's prudent though. They wouldn't have saved that woman if someone hadn't have thought in advance to carry that fire extinguisher in their vehicle.

When on the fire dept, many of the guys carried spring loaded center punches to break side and rear windows.

Guys, forget all those tools when you're in the car and need to get out

Take your headrest out and start smashing, it has pointed metal ends that are perfect for applying the right amount of pin point pressure to smash the **** out of windows

Or just drive a 23 year old truck that has manual roll down windows, they don't break as much as power windows too!

Lemme ask you a question: You're in a burning car. You have your seatbelt on, you're in a panic. What's going to be easier to do?

Reach into a pocket in the dash and grab a center punch

OR

turn around (if you can far enough with a seat belt on), find the damn little button that unlocks the headrest, try and pull it out straight without cocking or jamming it and use that?

A center punch is more accessible, however the headrest is always accessible. If it's easier you can take the one from your passenger seat, less rotation involved.

The key in any crisis is to avoid panicking. Panic clouds judgement and can prevent you from executing any necessary actions for self preservation

Edit: you also need to take your seat belt off at some point to exit the vehicle, in this situation doing so sooner rather than later is ideal as the buckles tend to be metal which will absorb heat quickly

The part in bold is something the majority of people don't even bother to think about in a situation like that. It's literally the last thing on their mind.

On another note, I'm checking the bottoms of the posts in my head rests in all my vehicles tonight to see if they're all pointed. I've never noticed it before.

I don't think the headrest bottoms in either of our cars are pointed, but I don't think it would take much of a "point" to break the window. The important piece would be a small point of impact, and some weight behind it. The headrest is a good idea because it gives you something to grip while you smash.

The ones in my previous vehicles had pointed ends, current vehicle does not have a detachable headrest but I can roll windows down and I do have a knife on hand with a sturdy pointed handle
