Key comes out when ON

This is something new for me. The key comes out when ON or PARK. It should only come out when OFF or LOCK.

Maybe its dirty? Anyone else seen this? Could someone have been trying to jimmy it?

sounds like the little pin that locks it in is stuck. douse it in wd40 and key-f*ck it for a few minutes and see if it works.

No luck. I used wd40 then break free and it just slides out easier now. I tried the key from my other ninja which has different teeth and it didn't help. At least its not turning with the wrong key. I also tried scraping the pins with a dental pick and that seemed to help a little, but not fix it.

Remove the the tumbler. It's simple to get out.

Once you remove the two screws that hold the latch/locking mechanism for the tank you'll see the that you will need to remove the o-ring and brass washer to expose the brash retaining wafer. Pushing that in towards the body of the tumbler and push the tumbler assembly outwards from the gas cap.

***Be really careful when removing the tumbler assembly. The wafers can fall out along with the springs. Make sure you remove the gas tank cap from the tank!***

Actually, I was referring to the ignition switch key. I had to use a piece of string to tie it to the bike so I wont lose it if it bounces out while I'm going down the road. The tumblers probably need to be removed and cleaned as well, but I'm pretty sure its a pretty big job getting them out.

I keep the house key and other keys on the same ring so if it pops out, I'm screwed. Plus its really hard to turn the bike off.

I just went out there and squirted carb cleaner down inside it. No change. The best help so far has been to use the wrong Ninja key in there. But it only works a little bit for a little while.

Its starting to look like I'm going to have to remove it and take it to the locksmith. Or I might ride over there and see if he can pick it or something.

That was an interesting video, but it wasn't the same as the Ninja. It did show the basics of how it works. He didn't really cover what it is that keeps the key from coming out. I looked at a few other videos too, but didn't find one that explained Ninja locks.

The facts in my case:

1. The key can pull out easily in any position - even in-between positions.
2. If I remove the key in-between positions and then insert the wrong key, the lock will turn to the next position, but no further.
3. The wrong key will not turn when inserted normally.
4. The correct key turns easily without any jiggling.

The bike has about 29K miles on it so it could be that something is just worn out and needs replacing. That's why I'm thinking about riding to a locksmith and letting him come out and look at it in the parking lot.

It could just be a worn key. Does the other key do it too?
A locksmith can make a new key to the numbers, not a copy of the old one.

I had a copy of the original key made when I first got the bike. I have been using the copy. The original key does the same thing and slides out when its not supposed to.

I'm just guessing either one of the wafer is worn or a detent in the ignition housing is worn where it locks into the key.

I'm going to go over there tomorrow and ask the locksmith guy to look at it. I can get an ignition switch on ebay for about $40-50, but the key will be wrong. Brand new at the dealer they are $100, but I have no idea what key I would get.

It only costed me $40 to get my old gsxr lock rekeyed but it helped that I had it out of the bike. The only thing I can think of is that all your wafers are worn out. You could probably use a different key from another bike and it would turn your bike on.

When you insert your key, the wafers hold the key in place. When you turn the ignition, the wafers cannot fall back out of the key groove since it would hit against the ignition body. More than likely your wafers are worn since they're of softer metal than the ignition body.

Just got back.

The locksmith said that the wafers were fine because the lock turns freely with the key and not at all without the key. If the wafers were worn out, the key would need to be jiggled to get it to turn. He said the lock housing was bad and that I needed a new one. He would need a new lock before he could do anything. He also said that the lock housing was made from pot metal and was easily broken.

BTW, around here they have a multitude of fake "pop a lock" locksmiths out here that aren't really locksmiths and don't have a state license. I had to go through hundreds of these fakers before I found the real deal. The fakers go around with a slim jim and will get your car door open and charge you $400 - and they are incapable of re-keying or picking a lock. Real locksmiths can do pretty much anything it takes to manipulate or repair a lock.

This seems more like a plus as long as it still locks correctly.

The problem is the possibility of losing it while going down the road. For now, I'm keeping tied to the bike with a clip. Or trying to. I'm probably the world's worst knot maker. The knots have come loose twice now, but fortunately, the key stayed in place.

I went down back in Feb and the handlebar got bent. The locksmith didn't think it was related, but I'm still wondering if it broke back then and I'm just now noticing.

damn I'm like 0-2 haha. it's possible that it could have an effect as to why it doesn't lock anymore if your steering was locked when it fell. Only way of knowing is taking it apart.

When I was a teenager my mother's 1981 Toyota Celica developed this problem. I already had the habit of pulling the key out as I turned it back, so sometimes it would not be fully off and I wouldn't know it (accessory position). It was like this once when I jokingly tried other keys in it and I was shocked when it started with a completely different key! I then started it with a spoon just for fun.
