[visordown.com] - Ducati and Indian Motorcycles to move into India

JUST two weeks after Triumph announced its move into India, Ducati and Indian Motorcycles are following suit.

Ducati are currently present in India through Precision Motors, who have acted as both an importer and distributor since 2008.

After reports of regular delays in motorcycle delivery and poor customer service, Precision Motors will continue to work with Ducati until the Italian marque set up their own dealer network, at which point the relationship between the two companies will end.

Cristiano Silei, Ducati Vice President of sales and marketing said: “We consider India an extremely important part of Ducati’s future global strategy and will strengthen our presence in the market with premium services and a larger network that will be in line with our global standards.

“Our entry into the Indian market is therefore a first step in this direction.”

With Audi buying Ducati in April last year, their move into India is likely to be part-funded by the German car company and other VW brands.

Following closely behind, US company Indian Motorcycles are looking to premiere their bikes in the third week of January 2014 in Delhi.

In 2011, the Polaris Group - who have roots in India selling a range of all terrain vehicles (ATV’s) – acquired the US based motorcycle company and are looking to get its name back on the map.

However, after going bankrupt in 1953, numerous companies have tried to revive the Indian Motorcycles brand with limited success.

Models anticipated to go on sale there are the ‘Chief Classic’, the ‘Chief Vintage’ and the ‘Chieftain’.

The first outlet will be in Delhi with more rumoured to follow in Mumbai and Bangalore.

The bikes will be delivered into India as Completely Built Units (CBU’s) which is likely to increase the price of the machines that go on sale.
