White residue inside fork oil seal
*just got the bike a month ago. 2007 - 12k
Started a fork rebuild last night because one of my tubes was leaking. I was inspecting all the parts after disassembly for wear when I noticed a white residue inside the leaking side oil seal. It looked like bacon grease. *already plan on replacing all fork seals So my question is anyone know what this white build up is inside the oil seal? |

I don’t know but maybe the previous owner tried to use some leak-stopping product? I guess it could also be something like spiderwebs or slug slime that built up over years of disuse until the forks were compressed and the seals concentrated a thin film of old deposits right where the seals slide. In that case, you might say they are just doing their job.

Yeah it's weird whatever it is. Reminds me of bacon grease.
So I was going to use waterproof grease to slide the new seal on but I wonder if the residue is old grease or maybe while lithium. Maybe I'll just use fork oil as lube to slide the seal on.....thoughts? Other non leaking fork seal has no white residue. |

I used some fork oil on mine when reassembling several years ago but I don’t recall if it was needed. Regardless, it couldn’t hurt though it might make the job a little messier.
Edit: I think I might’ve also packed the space between the dust seal and the oil seal with some kind of grease. Not sure what instructions I was following back then to check but I think so could recall the grease leaving grease rings that made it look like it was leaking when it wasn’t. |

My weight - 185
Replacing stock spring with Sonic Sping 0.85kg/mm Old weight for fill 75w Live in NH - ride late spring, summer and early fall Another question: I'm thinking I'm going to do a oil level of 160mm. Any suggestions or is 160mm the sweet spot? |

Looks like white lithium. It has a distinct smell. I use it all the time for seals but not specifically fork seals.

Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking it's white lithium also. It made a smooth lip inside the seal causing my leak.

Update:
Did the spring upgrade to weight appropriate and oil 15w filled to 130mm. Amazing different! I just got the bike this year and had nothing to compare, until today when I rode my girlfriends stock 250 and felt that fork dive during braking, so scary. She's getting new springs! Do the springs! The bike is so much fun in the corners and braking is sharp. It's night and day, how much better it made the bike. Now onto the rear shock lol |
