Guitar strings. I know you got a friend, but if not... I will be more than happy to send you a pack of used Ernie Ball Super Slinky's 9's.

Lemme know and good luck!

ps... a new set is about $5 on sale and will nearly last the lifespan of the bike.

And for reference...

Here is a set of 10's true measure.

Those gauges pretty much take care of every carb I have EVER run accross.... EVER.

Its advisable to know the manufactured size of the jet you are intending to poke prior to blindly going at it.

an '09 uses 38 pilot jet
.38mm = .0149"

I'd suggest a "fourteen" string in this instance....followed by a bath in spray carb cleaner, finish with compressed air. That should clear it without hogging it out.

Note, while guitar strings work great for pilot jets, the hidden inner passages within the carbs can't possibly be cleared with strings. Like a maze...there are varying degrees of bends and curves and varying sizes of orifices within each circuit.

Don't be misled...by design, they're a little more complex inside, eliminating the possibility of simply snaking them out using strings.

I used an old 8 gauge string I had followed by a soaking in pine sol for a few days. worked like a champ

Boiling them for about 10 minutes helps a LOT -- it almost cleans them 100%. I used stripped wire ties for bread wrappers and took my time on the slow jets that were completely blocked and it was over in about 5 minutes. You don't want to be too aggressive in there.

Coincidence....

Just yesterday encountered grossly hogged out pilot jets during an EX500 carbset refurb. I routinely index (measure) pilot jets within my service procedures....hence my discovery.

Marked as stock jet size...supposed to be .0139" were actually hogged out to .017". Intentional or "operator error"? Dunno.

Important to know what size you're dealing with....before and after cleaning.
These would have negatively affected fuel consumption to some degree.

Owner opted to replace with new (which I stock) .....all done.
