Koso fuel indicator + winter = ??

If this has been addressed, please link me as i can't find it with search.

Over the last weekend, especially Sunday and Monday nights when the temp was down to low to mid 30's, i noticed something odd on my Koso gauge.

Sunday, i filled up my tank and had the Koso read about 80% (as normal). However, shortly afterwards the indicator would drop until it was reading around 10-20% after about 50 miles. Then another dozen miles or so the indicator would read empty. I know i can make the 110 mile trip on one tank so just kept going. Got home and filled up again and only added 2.5 gallons.

This same thing happened the next day. Had 50 odd miles on the trip meter, the gauge was reading about 20%. Knew i had enough gas to make the remaining 65 miles so went anyway and rode most of that on an "empty" tank.

Can someone school me as to why my indicator is reading empty when i have about three quarters of a tank left? I'm still learning to trust this thing...

My Koso has been acting up similarly but I have not associated it with cooler weather yet. I personally think I got water in one of the connections or something while I was washing the bike.

I have however noticed a direct correspondence between an indicated massive fuel drop and when the radiator fan kicks on. Could you have possibly been sitting still for a while and despite the cooler weather, the radiator fan kicked on?

It has always reset the moment the fan turned off, but I know I too have been caught off guard by a seemingly empty tank many times due to the radiator fan.

Not that I have noticed, usually these are long highway rides so very little stop and go traffic.

I did a big test to see what my range was at 70mph. Filled up one night and the same thing happened where it dropped until empty 80 miles in. Since I was testing range, I just ignored it. Go out to my turnaround point and made it all the way back in. The gauge read empty for a total of 130 miles. I went 210 miles at 70mph and put in 4.75 gallons.

Blizzaro!! But this is why I keep testing my range.

I got my koso just after buying my bike in oct of 2011 so I was already in the cold weather from the start. I noticed what your describing on a 1000 mile trip in 40 deg weather. It's weird because cold weather is the conclusion I came to as well because a few months later it stopped doing it. On the other hand my gauge worked find all through last winter so maybe the electronic just needed to break in

My sensor is very sensitive to lean angle, braking, acceleration and being on the kickstand when you go to start it up after parking. I always read the gauge after a minute of smooth strait line constant throttle. I will say that although it sometimes reads lower then it should, it has never read high on me once in two years so at the very least it won't leave you stranded for a half full gauge and empty tank.

Also about a year ago my gauge started reading up to 100% after full ups for the first 20 or so miles then would drop to 90% and so on. I don't know why but the gauge just seems to get better and better as times goes on

Yeah. I've seen that too, the gauge will vary based on how the bike is sitting or if I am jumping off the line vs just lightly accelerating.

I think I'm just going to ignore it this winter. I know my range and will make sure i fill up before I get there. Just found it very odd.

Never had a problem. But the gauge works on resistance. Cold temp must change the resistance.
