Loud noise at startup?

09 ninja with 1700 miles on it, recent oil change about 150 miles ago. This is the first time I have given my bike more then 4 days of sitting without a ride, and I pulled it out of the garage and started it up. I heard a ear piercing pop the moment I hit the starter from what sounded like the exhaust. It wasn't cold outside and I've never needed to use the choke when starting up but this time the rpm was bouncing all over the place and then the bike died. I used the choke started her up and let it sit for 45 seconds then rode the bike with no problems. Anyone have a clue what that noise could have been and why suddenly it would die?
