Ugh. My turn....
Sadly, my pretty little bike has a few new scratches.
Came into a corner, and for whatever reason, didn't countersteer, so I wasn't going to make the turn. Started scrubbing speed, hit the dirt, locked up the rear, started sliding, then something grabbed and it flipped. I thought it was a high-side, but husband's video didn't show that. I was going fairly slow at the time, and video shows not a high-side. On the bright side, I did what I was supposed to in the slide, which is to let the bike do its thing without confusing it. My brain also was working and trying to remember what to do. I didn't get a concussion or anything. So no riding for a bit. And she's dirty. Poor baby. |

Crashing sucks, Kerry. I'm glad you're OK.
Is it possible you suffered from target fixation? |

The thing about crashing, is figuring out what you did wrong. go to your last memory before the crash and analyze what you were doing. There is a good possibility that you were target fixating that lead to a panic response of freezing.

That's a common reaction, but usually not a good route to take. Most of the time it's best to just suck it up and lean it in more. The risk is a low-side crash, but the benefit is a completed corner. On the race track, with lots of run-off, you can get away with heading straight off a corner, but on the street there are too many things in your way to hit. We've all come in too hot, and most of the time you can make the turn by just cranking over more than you think you should. With good tires and adequate traction (no rocks or sand) you almost always have more lean available than you expect. Just something to think about. |

Oh, yeah, I should totally have given her countersteer and leaned more. I could probably have held it. I forgot to commit to the corner, is the real thing.
Thank you for the well-wishes, everybody. I was glad I was wearing my gear, for sure! Leather jacket, kevlar pants, good gloves, good full-face helmet, and I even had good boots! I'd been wearing work boots but husband recently bought me real boots. I was glad that my brain was essentially still working the whole time. I knew I was sliding, and I knew to not do much, to let the bike do its thing, and I think I was doing mostly ok, even in the slide, but then she flipped to the other side and I didn't have anything I could do. I think something grabbed and the back wheel got traction. Luckily I had managed to scrub off a lot of my speed. Would have been an amazing video for me if I'd been able to hold it in the slide and get back on the road. |

Very glad you and your Ninjette weren't hurt too badly. While preferable to learn without mishap, this still presents an opportunity to learn and improve as a rider. @jkv45 offers some great advice about continuing the fight to make the turn as our motos have turning and grip capabilities far beyond our normal usage.
best wishes, GA

Any crash you can walk away from is a good crash; one you can ride away from is even better. Luckily, fixing these bikes is sooo easy.
Three cheers for gear! |

Get back to riding as soon as you can, particularly if this is your first real crash. That'll help you mentally get past this, because the mind naturally builds connections between activities and negative results and the longer you go the harder it will be for your mind to start associating riding with positive feelings.
As to the bike, look at where your handlebar risers mate with the top of the triple tree. If there's a gap then they're bent. They are not straightenable because they're cast and hard as hell. The bars on the other hand are fairly easy to straighten because they're mild steel and fairly ductile. Use a length of pipe perhaps 2'-3' long that fits over the bars and with the end of the pipe at the midpoint of the bend just ease the bar back. The main thing is to look at the neck of the bar where it installs in the riser, if it's strongly bent there then it's best to replace instead. I've been down on my bike 5 times. Once when pulling off on the shoulder onto grass where I discovered grass is the same as ice. Twice on ice, but those were less than 5mph. Once in my driveway when the kickstand found a crack in the asphalt under the gravel (oddly enough, though that one was a slow speed lay down rather than a full fall, it did the most damage to the bar and actually broke off the clutch lever), and once getting hit head-on by a truck turning into the wrong side of the street. I had to ride that one back to work, around 7 miles, with pieces falling off with every bump. Except for the two ice events all those other crashes happened in my first year of riding. I've ridden 80K miles since then. |

Thanks, I will be back on her as soon as she's squared up and my back is up to it. I've had way too much fun to give up because of one drop.
