Talking mmmmmm.....grippy goodness

So I finally took the jump to change out my hard as rock oem grips. I waited so long due to the horror stories I have read on here about people stripping the hell out of the bar ends or not being able to get them off. It seemed like a giant pain the ass. I currently do not have an impact drill so I took advantage of the Easter Harbor Freight 25% sale and got one of those manual impact screwdrivers. Best damn $7 I have ever spent on a tool, I can already think of many other uses for it on my car once I get some sockets to fit it. After holding a lighter under the bar end until i could smell the old grip start cooking, it only took one out two hit with a dead blow hammer to get the screw to break loose . Now I'm telling myself, wtf took so long for me to do this upgrade?! I ended up going with Progrip 737's and used the ol' hairspray method I used as a kid on my BMX. Slid on perfectly and waited a few hours to ensure hairspray had dried. Took a little ride tonight and, damn!!! Some much better than oem. It's like squeezing two plump kittens in my hands.
Here is a little pic of the finished product.

Haha, Harbor Freight has impact screwdrivers for that cheap?! thats great, time to get me one.
I used a screwdriver with vice grips on the handle to get more torque while i pushed as hard as i could on the end of the handle. they are tight!!

New grips look great! enjoy

People on the internet always do one of two things....

A. They either make it sound so difficult that you don't even want to attempt it. Thus making you over thinking it, get nervous and just say forget it.
or
B. They make it sound so easy anyone can do it but the leave out the risks (for instance changing spark plugs, everyone says how easy it is then a 17 year old kid tries it and over tightens it and cross threads the hell out of it, etc.)

Anyone that works on motorcycles should have a hand impact driver IMO. Haven't messed up a fastener since using it.

My bar end weights came off with the driver and no heat.

There's also the method of cutting off the old grips and then sliding on the new ones over the bar ends with liberal amounts of hairspray. No impact wrench required.

Well crap i didn't even think about that. I did just slice off the old grips and i doused the new grips with a crazy amount of hairspray. Thought I would have to wiggle them on, but slid on incredibly fast. Had i left the bar ends on it probably would have slid right over those.

I actually didn't even know they existed until reading about them on this forum a couple years ago. Have no idea how many times i could have used it for working on the car, especially on anything around the undercarriage or the axles, etc. Those bolts pretty much weld themselves to surrounding metal when in the elements for so long. Would nice to one day have an actual garage with an air compressor and air impact tools.......sigh, one day.

My 4 year old learned how to use her LeapPad ultra faster and better than I did. I thought I would have to teach her how to use it, but she took off on it and wouldn't even let me touch it after that. Also learned that she is way more observant than previously thought when i found out she had seen me input the password for the wifi unlock in order to purchase new apps for it. Caught her trying buy like 20 different apps, damn glad i didn't save my credit info on the account, girl would have wiped out the checking account!
