Handlebar Mount Bolt Missing??
Hello,
The car is out of commission due to some maintenance that I've messed up :/ so I have been riding the ninja to work. Tonight when I was out oiling the chain I noticed the large handlebar mount bolt is missing?? I heard a clunk noise when I was riding it home today, could that have been it falling out or has someone sabotaged me? Is that what this bolt is called? My main question is is it safe to ride this to work for one day without that bolt? I've attached a picture. Thank you, -Jonathan |

I would be sketched out and therefore wouldn't but I don't actually know for sure if it would cause any severe problems since I've never come across that exact problem.
That particular bolt is what connects the bars/forks/front wheel to the rest of the bike so I can imagine a laundry list of potential problems that could come up, largely with steering, braking, and accelerating...

Thank you for your words of wisdom lol I feel pretty much the same way. Anybody know what size that bolt is so I can get a temp. replacement until I can get the OEM bolt?

It's the "Stem head bolt"
The problems off the top of my head :- The weight mostly is taken on steel bottom yoke. The steering bearings should have a separate locknut so are of less concern The forks minus that bolt will be a little more inclined to twist and it is that twisting in the yokes which will misshape the holes they pass through or even shear the pinchbolts. (Catastrophic since the front of the bike will colapse as the forks slide right up through the loose lower yoke holes. If you cant get a Ninjette bolt I would imagine other bikes use the same thread to replace it (and the washer) until you get the real thing. and check the pinch bolt torques afterwards. If you ride it at all I would be inclined to make it a gentle run to a dealer for a part and phone in to work. (potholes, drain covers and hard braking are not your friend) Last futzed with by Ninjinsky; August 1st, 2014 at 10:15 AM. |
