[motorcycle.com] - Husqvarna TR650 Strada and Terra Recalled for Stalling Issues

Remember the Husqvarna TR650 Strada and Terra, the two street-legal Huskys released in 2013 and 2014 but discontinued when BMW sold the brand? KTM hasn’t forgotten, but only because the company got stuck with the task of recalling a motorcycle it never produced.

The TR650 models were among the last new Husqvarnas released under BMW ownership. In fact, it was only just over three months after we reviewed the Strada and Terra that BMW sold Husqvarna to Pierer Industries, KTM’s primary owner. As the TR650’s engine was based on the BMW G650‘s powerplant, the Strada and Terra were discontinued following the sale. Still, though KTM never produced the models and BMW still owns the rights to the engine design, it’s the Austrian manufacturer’s responsibility to handle a new recall on the TR650s.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the 2013-2014 Husqvarna TR650 Strada and Terra may unexpectedly stall, creating a potential for loss of control and increasing the risk of a crash. In a letter sent to NHTSA dated Feb. 23, KTM North America’s Vice President of Operations Robert Pearce says the cause of the engine stalls is still under investigation, and the the company is working with BMW and fuel management system supplier Magneti Marelli to determine the cause and a solution for the problem. Other documents released by NHTSA say the investigation was still ongoing as of March 18.

Meanwhile, last summer, BMW issued its own recall for the 2013-2015 G650GS because it too experienced stalling issues. For the G650GS, BMW says the engine may stall when the clutch lever is pulled in while idling because of a bug in the ECU software. That’s likely where the investigation into the TR650’s problem begins.

KTM will alert owners once a remedy has been developed. The recall affects 1,015 units in the U.S.
