Rear Wheel Lateral Play

I've put the rear wheel on the bike for the first time in forever and I noticed that the wheel is able to slide on its axle a little. Is this normal?
My memory escapes me. I don't think the wheel is moving enough to appreciably affect chain wear, but I'd like to cover my bases. Does anyone else's bike have this space as well?

The assembly is incorrect: zero lateral play is needed.

Right, things should be stacked so that tightening the axle completely removes any ability of the wheel and its bearings to slide left and right. At that point, if the bearings allow any looseness of the wheel, felt by gripping the tire and pushing left and right, they need replacing.

All the bearings in both wheels have been replaced, I've already taken apart the assemblies to try to figure out what's wrong. Is there supposed to be a washer in the rear wheel assembly? I have a washer for the front axle, but not the rear. But that shouldn't affect the spacing of the components between the swingarm unless if there is a washer that's supposed to fill that space in my picture.

Hmm....

This is the assembly for your 2010:

http://www.ronayers.com/oemparts/a/k...ar-wheel-chain

As Jim well explained above, the axle and nut should firmly compress the parts of the assembly, the inner rings of both bearings and the separator (part 92143).

Actually, the force should be high enough to create the friction that prevents the wheel from sliding back and forth due to breaking and the pull of the chain, keeping the proper alignment.

Is your axle nut tight? There is some play before tightening, but none after.

That was exactly the issue. The axle nut being torqued squeezes the swingarm and wheel assembly just enough.

Frustrating, but I learned something.
