where can i learn stunting?

i know im not the only one who wants to know. im not looking to get myself killed on public roads. i know a sproket change is usually necessary to get the 250 to wheelie easy but i've seen vids of guys doing it on stock 250s. anyone got any great howto vids or reading material to help out for those of us that would like to know?

where? LARGE closed parking lots that don't have security details.
how? very carefully.

there's plenty of videos on youtube describing how to wheelie and stoppie. a stock ninja can be wheelied and stoppied if you know what you're doing. i wont pretend that i know much (if anything) about stunting. but be careful out there. i've seen too many (any is too many) people trying to learn how to stoppie take it too far and faceplant with the bike in their back.

thanks for the warning alex. truthfully im not really worried about learning stoppies right away until i learn to balance the bike on the rear wheel first. but i will be certain to practice in real open empty parking lots. i will do a youtube search. thanks for the help!

Get a busted 600 with a cage, so you can drop it as much as you need to !

This. And if there's a local stunters group in your area, I suggest you get aquainted with them.

I'd imagine crashing and "trial and error" play a huge part in learning how to stunt. It's probably better for everybody if you learn from someone in person vs an e-stunter on the internet

I'd suggest using a dirt bike to learn stunting. They are made to withstand crashing and crash you will while learning.

Take a ninja 250R to a clear empty industrial road on the weekends where nobody will ever be and learn to do clutch wheelies with it. It won't flip on you, I promise. lol

Then do them on a 600 and watch how easy it is.

It's fun/easy to do wheelies on a dirt bike but somewhat unrealistic as to what it's like to ride street. You need more cajones to do a wheelie at speed on the asphalt. You have to make it happen and not be a baby.

I saw a few gsxr 600 and 750 stunt bikes with wheelie bars and cages on them for like $1200 on cragslist when I was looking for my bike. I did a picture perfect wheelie on my 600 the other day but it's old and I'm gonna break it if I keep doing that stuff so decided no more wheelies since I know I can do them anyways. Not going to do them on the street where I can show them off and get killed so why bother.

As far as tips to wheelie a stock 250R.. (please take it off the open public roads)

Pull in clutch while rolling 5mph in first gear.
Rev that sucker to 10K or better and HOLD the throttle there.
Lean back slightly (seriously!)
cover the rear brake with your foot in case you wheelie too far.
Let the clutch out FAST and ALL THE WAY. If you do it too slow or not all the way, you won't wheelie.

Now control the wheelie with the throttle and your lean angle and the brake pedal.

When your front wheel comes down, make sure your arms are loose or you could get a nice tank slapper going.

Your much better off buying a dirtbike or old beat up 600 then trying to use the 250. Your going to end up tearing the clutch to pieces on the 250 because you have to almost redline it and dump the clutch to wheely unless you do some MAJOR sprocket changes...which will give you no speed at all to ride out a wheely.

I personally think for starting to learn, a dirtbike would be best as kkim suggested. As long as your somewhere legal, your offroad so you don't have to worry about cops messing with you. Falling will hurt a lot less. And the bike will take a lot less damage.
After you get comfortable moving around on the bike, find some local stunters and see if they have an area thats close that they practice at. I'd then suggest taking the dirtbike there (by truck) and practicing on that and getting used to the street. Then later getting a 600 to continue learning on.

Always wear gear, your going to fall.

You can stunt just about any bike depending on your budget for the bike, mods to make it "stuntable" (crash cages, rails and repairs) and taste. If you don't mind abusing your 250 a little, get some frame, bar, fork and swingarm sliders for a start and then start with basic front wheel hops and wheelies in a parking lot.

Given where you live I'd really suggest looking for local stunting groups to watch, meet, and if you get along with them and they are welcoming, start learning from and practicing with.

If you like it beyond these and start looking to really explore the dicipline, look into a rebuilt bike that you can cage and mod. for stunting - a rebuilt bike even if it's iffy for road use makes a good stunting mule.

Then it's all about practice, learning, watching and seeking out as much information as possible.

There are some schools on the west coast that teach wheelies and similar but I'd try to find locals that aren't complete muppets and learn from doing with people around to help and critique.

Be prepared to fail a lot, fall a lot, and wear gear all the time... but it will pay off!

Good luck!

It can handle a little abuse, but it's good to be able to repair it yourself if you do break it too.
I'd say the 250 is good to learn clutch control on for wheelies. You can be confident it won't totally flip you right off the back without trying.
So is a dirt bike but still they are much easier and less scary IMO.
the low gear and high torque and different suspension make dirtbike wheelies slower and simple. It's not going to tank slap you if you mess up either.

After learning clutch wheelies on a 250 you'll have them nailed no problem on a 600. It suddenly becomes much easier.
Trust me on that one.

Old beat up first gen crags list 250 or 500 should be cheap first stunt bike too maybe?
