Added a Stablemate

Got a deal from a buddy that I couldn't pass up.

'02 FZ1 with about 20k on it. Tank has a good dent from falling over and front fairing is cracked. Plans are to swap front with 07+ R1 and street fighter it and have the tank fixed. Repaint as well.

Best part?? $1500!!

Crappy pic.

If it has been sitting for while, check the inside of that tank for rust.
Clean out that rust before you run the bike, residue can clog up the carb jets easily.
Those old carb'ed FZ1 are hoot, screams after 7k rpm.

Have a buddy who's brother has an FZ1 of that generation. I've never ridden it, but I've been told it's a great street bike. Congrats on the new ride!

That's gonna be sick! Is it an easy swap or a lot of machine work?

I'v thought about putting the R6S front end on my bike, but ultimately it's too much work for what I use the bike for. I think I'll just do springs and emulators.

You can use the R1 triples with the fz1 stem, just have to get a spacer made and then have it pressed in. There's a guy with a shop that does it, still gotta mail him my stuff.

It'll be R1 shocks, brakes, triples, bars, wheel and fender lol. Already put an S1000rr rear shock in and tank is getting fixed now.

Haven't pulled carbs yet but I felt and looked under one and they aren't drilled out so I'm pretty sure they're stock. AIS is removed tho. So many parts coming for this thing lol, gonna get the Ivan kit most likely.

So I've been slacking when it comes to bike stuff. Here's the latest update with the FZ, it's getting there lol. The 250 is still a baller as usual

All parts have been custom painted, front/rear fenders, tank, tail, handles, radiator side shrouds. Wheels have been powdercoated and tires put on. Turns out with the tires on, they're too wide to fit into my shop press to get the bearings in, oops lol. So tomorrow they go to the local bike place to have them assembled and then I can start putting the bike back together.

I just bought a Gen 2 upper triple with risers, ignition attached and a key for it. Going to try and re-pin the plug to get the ignition to work so hopefully I don't have to drill it out. Rizoma Ultra-Low bars in gunmetal color ordered as well as some bar end mirrors. Snagged a full Hindle exhaust.

I still haven't figured out a headlight setup for it yet, that'll probably come last.

R1 front wheel, rear same color

Wheels assembled and put on the bike with the front end. Brake lines attached and mocked up but no fluid in them yet. I'm waiting on my Gen 2 Triple and handlebars to get here to finish up most of the front end. Using the R1 triple for now.

It's a good thing I bought that Hindle full exhaust, when I went to take off stock header not only was it FULL of SPIDERS in the EXUP but it was so rusted down there that one of the cable ends snapped off lol. Talk about maintenance rofl.

I used the '08 R1 horn and mount, just cut the plastic piece up so it would fit and can route cables through it. I still need to figure out what to do about a headlight.

PICS!

SPIDERS!

Got a little more done today. The top triple I need won't be here until Monday so I can't finish up with the controls and gauges. Put a lot more back together today to make sure everything fits. The bike still won't run until I pull the carbs and jet them and stuff but at least it's rolling lol. The rear hugger isn't on because it still needs a chain and front sprocket on.

Got the gen2 triple in. Still has the ignition attached with the plug cut off but I have a key for it. Seems there's one more wire on the gen2 than gen1 ignition, it's orange. Hopefully I can get it to work because I really don't want to drill it out.

Handlebars and controls on now. Need to figure out what I want to do for gauges, R1, Koso, or figure out a mount for the stock ones. The bracket I bought from someone only fits the gen1 triple, didn't realize that until today.

I'm really liking the blue radiator shroud. Ties it together nicely as a bike that was intended to be left naked, not just a bike where someone forgot the bodywork.

Got some more work done today making the headlight. This post is my progress in kind of a DIY for naked headlight setup HID retrofit. I'll try and explain exactly what I did, in case anyone else likes it and wants a starting point. I got the single Mini D2S projector setup from TRS with a Panamera shroud.

Bought this headlight off ebay for like $30.

Comes apart with two screws on the bottom

We won't need any of the wiring or bulb setup that came with it. There's three screws on the back of the reflector housing but they don't actually let you separate the back from the glass, it just pulls the whole thing out from the black housing. So we'll need to cut the back off of it to fit the projector in there.

Next I made some circles with my hole saws in some Lexan. I wanted 1/4" plexi but it only came in a huge sheet that I didn't need so I got the thinner lexan and made two to stack. These are like 5" and then I think about 2.5 or 3" for the inner hole to make sure the projector fits through it. I drilled some holes at first for screws to mount it but they didn't work out lol. I'd recommend just waiting until they're mounted in there.

We're going to set them back in the housing as a mounting plate for the projector.

I used this new liquid nails "fuze it" to hold them in there. It seems really strong and was nice and easy to lay in there and adhere them.

Front and back of the rings

This headlight comes with a bracket we're not going to use, and it doesn't actually come with any hardware for mounting it, what do you expect for $30 right? Anyway, a trip to home depot later for some 5/16 bolts in 2" and 2.5" plus some random stuff I thought might work to mount it in my head. Turns out these bigger T shaped mounts work well. Just have to drill out the top holes to 5/16 and then mark for the bottom holes and drill them out. Get a bag of the washers and nuts too.

I needed 4 washers on each side of the 2" bolts and this mounted pretty good.

Mocking it up

With the shroud and projector in there mounted up.

Still need to add one more supporting brace for the headlight into the second mounting holes but it's coming along.

Got a little more done today. Moved the regulator to under the tank, put some fluid in the front brakes and bled them for a while but they're still not tight so the lever is zip tied to the bar for the night. Also changed the sprockets and put a new chain on. Man it was CAKED with black dirt/grease under the front sprocket cover. That took a while to clean out. There was also some mouse poop in the coolant overflow tank from the bike sitting forever when my buddy owned it, so I had to pull that out and clean it out. I also wired up the ignition from the gen2 triple to my stock plug. The gen2 has one extra orange wire so I just didn't hook it up to anything since the stock harness only needs those 4.

Big boy breaker bar for the front sprocket
