Which brand of battery should I go for?

So I need to replace my battery. I know that the part number of the battery I'm looking for is YTX7A-BS but which brand is good?

Are you looking for a lightweight or traditional style battery?

I've had good luck with the rebranded Deka AGM batteries that Advance Auto sells. The size that the EX500 and VN750 use end up being ~$50 after coupon code. They're not much more than the cheapest ones you can find, and you can go get them locally instead of waiting for shipping.

For whatever it's worth, they list the YTX7A-BS for the '08 and the YTX9-BS for the '09-'12. They have an ETX9 to fit that one. I'm sure someone else has better information, but I think you can swap them by just removing a spacer or something (possibly have to mod the battery box a little).

Deka's batteries are rebranded and sold under multiple names. I've seen Magna Power (what AA sells) and Big Crank listed. I wouldn't assume each and every ETX9 is a Deka, but it's quite likely if it looks identical other than the sticker.

Haven't had any problems with the advanced auto battery I bought. Don't remember the price but she fires right up every time, though it's only 6 months old.

The last battery I bought was one of these for my Aprilia. Expensive, but it's crazy how light they are.

http://www.bikemaster.com/batteries/...mit=all&store=

So far no problems with reliability. Even in freezing temps my bike starts first time, every time.

If I were to replace my battery I'd buy a shorai, but if I was strapped for cash I'd get a yuasa. Hope this helps.

I think on the pregen you need to change your rectifier if you go Shorai, but this is something you should do anyway, and someone on the forum has an easy kit to do it.

Different battery chemistries have different charging methods. If you're switching to something new and fancy, do some research into how it likes to be charged. The 40+ year old charging technology used on these bikes (the NewGen is a different part number, but it's the same style R/R as the PreGen) isn't the most precise. The MOSFET R/R retrofit is a little better, but its output still may not match the ideal setup for an exotic battery.

If I happen to have to buy the battery online will it come fully charged?? so I don't have to do anything and just install it right away.

Mostly, but I've always charged them first before using them, just to be sure, and a long time ago it's what we did, to avoid damage to the battery, or some other reasons.

I'm old, and don't remember

And you use that battery tender to charged them right?

Do you have a battery tender? It can be used to make sure that the battery is fully up to speed before you install it.

I'm using a Ballistic 4-cell battery. Weighs less than a pound and so far had no trouble charging and starting the bike. It was about $100. Reasoning instead of trying to squeeze horsepower out of the small engine, best bet would be to lighten the bike as much as possible.

The 7A in your battery part number indicates its a 7 amp/hour battery. The rest of the letters designate things like terminal location, case size, material used and such. I have 6 bikes right now with the lithium batteries from Batteries Plus in them all with good results. I believe that you can get these with a higher Amp/hour rating in the same size case but I would have to double check. They are more expensive ($130 ish) but these things weigh less than the box they come in!

My bike is 09 and they tell me that YTX9-BS can fit. So I decided to buy Yuasa YTX9-BS.

I just put this one in my 250. I had to remove the foam at the bottom of the battery box and also remove the plastic cover on the battery that holds those relays. It's a snug fit after that but squeezes in there.

Major plus is that it you don't have to fill it and it's cheap too. We'll see how it holds up.

You bought it online? Do you have to charge it before you put on your bike? This one doesn't look like you have to put the acid yourself.

Got it right off amazon. It comes sealed up and ready to go, it was nearly fully charged when I got it but I threw it on the charger for the night anyway.

I have a little battery tender brand tender which is fine for maintaining charge and it gives you a plug to wire to the battery to make it easier. I also have an automatic Schumacher charger/maintainer that's more of a beast and charges faster but it cost more. Both you can probably get at Walmart.
