Scariest movie you have seen
For me it would have to be "Alien". Even though I've seen it numerous times it still scares me like no other movie.

Japanese Horror movies, not any of the American remakes.
ie. Grudge 1,2,3, Shutter, The Ring etc.

I don't know if I would call it scary so much as creepy, but recently I rewatched the movie 'Frailty', with Bill Paxton and Matthew McConaughey. That movie really sent chills down my spine when I first saw it...

I can think of a lot of so-called "scary movies" that I like, but none that truly scared me. I guess being scared isn't what makes them good. In fact, I usually don't enjoy the ones the count on being scary because they usually fall flat. For example, "Audition" was freaky, but not scary as the makers intended. Because it had nothing else to offer it did not hold any entertainment value for those who didn't find it scary. I couldn't justify having watched it myself, so I couldn't recommend it to anyone except as a really freaky and twisted Japanese film.
I guess my personal favorite are those that combine horror and Sci-Fi, like Event Horizon, Sphere, and Alien(s). In each of those, there's a "fun" element for those who aren't scared which seriously raises the entertainment value. |

By far it was Jaws!
I was a kid and spent a lot of time at the beach back then. A few weekends after this movie came out, it seemed like there was only like half the people at Newport Beach and many of the people there were only wading out in ankle deep water... this movie scared a lot of people! |

My favorites for their cinematic value have got to be The Omen, The Exorcist and maybe the Amityville Horror... In terms of startle the pants off you scary, I'd probably go with Candyman - that one killed me when I was younger.

Frankenweenie. Has to be Frankenweenie. For some reason, as a kid, that scared the **** out of me. Partly because when I was a kid, black and white films in general just scared me. Soooo much. I refuse to watch that movie. Stupid childhood!
Alien never really scared me. Really awesome movie though. |

REC was pretty damn scary.
The stupid American remake for it ruined it though, so REC won't be as scary if you have seen that one first (Quarantine). They basically copied the story exactly, added in some guns and removed and or ruined the scariest scenes of the movie. Paranormal Activity was pretty scary too. |

"The Village", was meant to be a scary movie but the only reason it was scary was because it was so crap. Still remember when I watched it on the opening day, almost everyone walked out of the movie before it ended ... bloody disgraceful!

Also, I think people misinterpret his movies. The Sixth Sense wasn't a horror movie. For one thing, it was PG-13. For another, the boy just dealt with the things he saw. |

I can't really remember a movie that scared me to where I couldn't sleep or was truly freaked out. Movies today tend to just only have the "BOO" factor where it makes you jump. There aren't many movies today that just really freak you out.
My wife can't stand anything ghost related and it be dark outside. She says she doesn't believe in them, but if she saw one, she would believe but be dead. lol I watch Ghost Hunters. When it comes on, she leaves the room and heads to the bedroom to watch TV. The Shining was pretty freaky. Good flick though. Blair Witch had that freaky ending, but it was more because how they worked the ending in. Can't honestly remember a movie that really scared me.

Well, because I can't think of any scary movies that have scared me since I was 5yo, at least I thought of one *scene* that scared me in a "Best Picture" winner. Actually, "disturbed" is the better word.
So, instead of scariest movie, how about "most disturbing scene?" If you haven't seen the 2004 Crash film, DO NOT WATCH THIS CLIP. You do not have the full story and you will be ruining any chance you had at properly enjoying this film in the future. Do not read or watch anything below if you haven't seen the movie. If you aren't going to heed this advice, at least watch this first. There's more setup too because, well the movie is specifically about how intertwined our lives are with strangers even in a big city like LA. The shooter is a shop owner who wrongly believes that the locksmith is a gang-banger who trashed his store. They show bad (usually prejudice) and good sides in nearly every character, so it is wrong to decide that his character is "bad" based on this scene alone. He realizes right here that he was wrong about the locksmith when he sees the family and what he almost did to them. Of course he had a change of heart.

Just watched Eden Lake last weekend and it was scary.
Not a typical horror scary but realistic scary. It felt like it could actually happen and that's what made it so scary. |
