Operating temp. question
I know it's been a while since I have been on here......working 2 jobs and doing ALOT of riding to get there.
I posted this question on ninja250.org and got mixed feedback. So, here goes: 2007 with just over 12,000 miles. I do all maintenance; valves last adjusted around 6,000 miles (I know its time again) to the polar "loose end" of the spectrum. Carbs never pulled/cleaned, but have run some B12 in the gas recently. Carbs synced once, at around 1000 miles. Bike has not sat for more than 3 days without being ridden since last December. Issue: Here over the last month or so, the bike wants to stall when coming to a stop at the beginning of the ride. I have tried letting it warm up with the choke.....which helps a bit, but I know better than to let it warm up idling. Once the bike gets up to temp, it runs great at any rpm/speed. Idles fine...no problems when warm. This morning on the way to my first job, I let it run with choke for about a minute then rode off. At my first stop it died, even with enrichner on. It was difficult to get it restarted and I had to blip the throttle at the first 3 lights I came to. I find it difficult to set the enrichner properly for use until it will idle without it. After about 5 solid minutes of riding, it finally ran/idled fine. No problems with warm starts afterwards either. What are the possibilities here? It is certainly temperature related.....never hesitates or acts strange after a good 5 min of riding. Motor also sounds normal. Ideas?? Thanks a bunch for any input! |

Do a valve job and see if the problem goes away.

+1 for valve adjustment. Have you checked the fuel filter?

***UPDATE***
Worked on the valves Monday night. 2 exhaust valve clearances (same cylinder) were too tight. Also, electrodes on plugs were worn. Seemed odd for only 12,000 miles...plugs were clean though. Adjusted 2 valves, popped in new plugs, changed oil/filter, cleaned air filter and she is riding like new again. My only question is, was it the valve lash or the plugs that caused the problem??? Thanks again guys. |

Old plugs were factory installed, new ones are same brand/model. In addition to the worn electrodes, the old ones had too wide of a gap too.
On another note, my bike is running better than it ever has! I am beginning to wonder if I mis-adjusted the 2 exhaust valves the last time I worked on them. I just never thought that 2 exhaust valves being a bit too tight would cause the bike to run as poorly as it was. |
