I don't understand why he stopped on the right side of the road to make a left. I normally stop at the far left edge of the lane when signaling left, so someone behind me can get around me if he wants to. I don't know if that would have made the outcome better or worse in this case though.

Was the truck directly behind him? As he turns, the car in the mirror looks pretty close.
It was mentioned in the comments that he pulled to the right side of the lane to make a left turn. It's hard to fault him for this, since being a few inches to the left probably would've gotten him killed, but it was mentioned that it looked like he was pulling over. The turn signal (hand and flasher) should've been an indication that he was turning left (though I'm pretty sure you're supposed to leave your hand out for a manual signal, not just stick it out for half a second). The hand gesture and moving to the right may have been interpreted as him pulling over and for the truck to pass (despite the blinker). I'd like to think being over to the left would've made it more obvious what he was doing, but I'm glad that he wasn't with the way things unfolded.

Interesting, I though this same thing. The dude simply "ninja'ed" the signal. We train this at the track too. When your gunna pit in, put your hand up and keep it up for at least 5 or so seconds. A quick flash of the hand is not good enough and will get you rear ended. (we don't have turn signals on the track ya know)

Wait wait, you guys use hand signals on the street? I thought that was for bicycles? I just use my turn signals.

I do sometimes. Especially if I'm on a fast road with cars behind me. I throw my arm out to grab as much attention as possible.

It's a well known internet fact that indicators on motorcycles mean nothing and are to be considered as decoration lighting only! So many riders (including myself on far too many occasions blissfully ride along with signals flashing, a remnant from the previous completed maneuver, oblivious to their meaningless message to others!
Never rely on your indicators or the indicators of others and assume the indication is what a rider will actually do!

A bad situation to put yourself in, either for country road or city street: avoid it at any cost.

I don't know why he is in the right third of the lane. Is that a thing in some places? If there was an oncoming car and the truck had nowhere to go that would have ended in tears.

I do this every Mon. and Thurs. that I go to tkd. I must turn left into a small drive. The last .5 mile before getting to my turn is spent evaluating the turn. If there are cars then I have the utmost of patience and let them go so there is no one behind me at the turn point, no need to pass. Although, there seems to be some cut in the video between the passes and the turn point. So my comment may or may not be applicable. Point is... a little bit of patiences goes a loooooooonnnnnnngggggggg way.
