Engine Rebuild Question

I’m just about done putting my engine back together. I’m trying to put the flywheel bolt(92002) back in the flywheel.

My question is how do I stop the crankcase from turning while I tighten the bolt.

use a rubber grip tool (like what you use to grab an oil filter) around the hub.

I use an impact gun. If all else fails you can put the engine in the bike with the cover off. Put the chain on and hold the rear brake.

I wanted to get an impact driver but I didn't want to get a cheap one. I'm between jobs at the moment (interview on Tuesday wish me luck) so the less money I spend the better.

I thought about doing that exactly, but I checked the engine's specs and it only puts out about 20 ft-lbs. The bolt requires about 51 ft-lb so I was afraid to I would break something.

Anyway the strap wrench did work, the bolt is secure. But this reminds me of something else. I have about a 3/8" of free play in the gears of my clutch basket. Is that cause for concern.

if i'm poor and need tools i'll usually go buy it, use it, then return it. harbor freight doesn't care since the tool only cost then $0.50c

For the flywheel, whatever you do, use a torque wrench for putting it back on. You can use an impact wrench for taking them off, but putting them on you need to make sure you don't overtorque it.

Are you sure the 3/8" is from the gears and not the basket itself.

They can be pretty loose and still work OK. I don't think its possible to find one that is perfect though.

I agree. I've been thinking about it and i can't remember there being any sign of a problem. The first time I even suspected a problem was when I pulled out the clutch basket and saw it move. So I'll let it go for now.
