Danmoto Exhaust

Bought a new muff recently and thought I'd share the goods. So here's a little review for you to look over.

The box:
IMG_0052.JPG

Unpacked box. Boy oh boy is this stuff tightly packed. Make sure you factor in a good 5 minutes and a really sharp blade to get all the bubble wrap and tape off:
IMG_0053.JPG

Smaller parts. This includes the pipe to muff connector, springs, exhaust holder and protector. I have a huge gripe here. The exhaust holder is horrible. Merely a piece of aluminium with a rubber sleeve to go on it. Surely there is a better way:
IMG_0054.JPG

Weight. 0.7kg by itself. When I measured myself holding and not holding the muffler it was 0.8kg difference. So we can say 0.7 to 0.8 kg. Light:
IMG_0055.JPG

For comparison here is a "$36 Muffler". Stock muffler de-baffled and cut down:
IMG_0067.JPG

Outlet. Good looking thing this is. Welds are quality:
IMG_0057.JPG

Inlet. Again craftsmanship is flawless:
IMG_0058.JPG

Chips. There are a few small chips on the very edge of the carbon. Can we expect it to be flawless for $140? I think this is fine:
IMG_0059.JPG

Build Quality: 8/10

1 point off for the chips, 1 point off for the dodgy holder.

Here it is installed on the bike:
IMG_0069.JPG

Installation is fairly straight forward with a few minor flaws. For one the strap that comes with it needs to be drilled out to suit the stock hanger bolt. The other was that the springs were too big. But it sits on there fine without them.

I recorded the difference in sound for your enjoyment. Here's the link:

Link to original page on Vimeo.

Here's what my recording setup looked like:
IMG_0071.JPG

Sound Quality: 9/10

Hope that helps anyone thinking of buying one.

Everyone has a differing opinion on what is too loud so I'll just say that this exhaust with stock pipes is too loud for me. With the Tyga pipes as well it is much too loud. I'm actually fitting the DanMoto silencer today. I'll let you know how it goes.

Just the muffler, probably not. If you've got a service coming up you may as well have them look at the jetting too. It's the same as any muffler replacement I guess.

I'm now using the Tyga pipes with this muffler. Great combo but it requires a little bit of modification to fit together.

How is the combination going for you? I'm also looking into the VR6 by sportisi, What are your thoughts on the two full systems?

I have no experience with the Sportisi system so I can't comment between the two. I know Matt fully stands behind his products and lots of people are using them.

My thoughts on this combo are "cheap and cheerful". Especially in Australia where importers chuck on huge margins for themselves. It's nice to get something in fairly priced.

I'll be heading to the dyno soon hopefully so I can update after that.

Full exhaust, BRT-TIS, Sportisi Jet Kit, open air filter. At least, that's what will be on the bike when it goes on the dyno.

I got one too, also ordered the dBkiller with it but never received the dbkiller.
And I don't get anymore answers from Danmoto about my questions
about the missing dbkiller.

Is there anybody here who has ever received it because I am doubting
if this dbkiller exists at all ....

Yes I bought one from their website and it arrived in timely fashion.

I did email them about a few issues once and they never got back to me. Customer service seems hit and miss.

They actually told me they had send a replacement for the missing baffler but that one didn't arrive either. I always got answers from my e-mails untill I asked them a few days ago where that second baffler was and that I still hadn't got it after 4 (!) weeks and since then it is radio silence. So far for the Danmoto service. It is now 2 months since I bought the exhaust and it still isn't complete. As I live in a very crowded area I can't use it without baffler.

And I could order a new baffler, they are not expensive, but as the first two didn't arrive (I very much doubt if they were ever send) who garantees this one will arrive ???

have you found the slip on to cause alot of backfiring and did the baffle make much of a difference?

It backfired the same amount as my cut down.

The baffle made a very small difference. It's still quite loud though.

The other was that the springs were too big. But it sits on there fine without them.
Please, either find springs that do fit, or have a shop look at welding it sealed. For one, the springs are there to cut down on the movement of the pipe at the joint, for another, if that joint flexes back and forth too much, metal fatigue will set in. In an EXTREME case, you could end up with something that looks like this:

A bracket broke, taking the springs with it, the flex between the header pipe and canister was not noticeable at the stop we made where it was found the bracket broke, felt completely solid with almost no noticeable movement. Within less than 100 miles, the canister separated from the header, fell free, clipped the roadway and pole vaulted the motorcycle, sending me down the road at 80mph. Fortunately, on the Ninja, the exhaust does rest under the motor, should that joint fail, I believe that aluminum strap would fail allowing the canister to rip away from the bike...

But is that something you really want to chance when the fix is rather simple?

The exhaust itself is irrelevent. Due to the size and weight of the full exhaust, it was decided that an additional bracket needed to be added. Unfortunately, the bracket itself was the Original Point of Breakage. Everything after was collateral damage. Had the bracket not dislodged the springs, the springs would have held the canister and header together, even as the canister got looser and looser from the additional flex. The springs held enough tension on the canister, it kept the header seated at the bottom of the canister input.

Once at home, and after I healed up enough, I took the canister and matched it up to the header. When we first assembled everything, it was a very snug fit. I had 2K miles on the exhaust before the bracket broke, and we had enough confidence in how tight the joint felt at the gas station where it was noticed I had lost the bracket, that we didn't think not having the springs there anymore would be a problem. The canister input had rounded out so much in 100 miles, there were cracks in the pipe and the joint itself was so sloppy I could use matches as shims and still have it be loose.

Springs are on now with the Tyga exhaust. I never planned for it to stay springless for long. Even so, it was on there for a little while and never moved.

Unlucky in your case. Must have hurt a bit.

I'm still yet to get to the dyno guys. I'll try my best not to be lazy and get it there soon.

Better to make a graphic point of something that HAS happened to someone and is not an Urban Myth, then to have someone reading this and thinking its okay to leave out the springs.

I did also send an email to DanMoto about the few issues I had (springs, holder being rubbish etc.) but never received a reply. Hopefully they read it and fixed the issues...

I also complained about the spings being too long (60mm) and
they send me some 40mm long versions. I did however manage
to use the 60mm versions for the time being and hooked them
to the clamp instead of the original points.

And my dbkiller or baffle finally arrived after 8 weeks.
Danmoto however didn't respond to any emails anymore.

Are the 40mm ones more suitable for the job?

I just ordered mine - I'll have to contact them to make sure they include the proper springs prior to shipping then, just so I don't have to wait for them later if they ship the wrong ones...

To those that ordered from the Dan Moto site: was your order status updated on their site? What was your shipping time? I ordered mine on the 18th and it still says processing when I check my order history. I emailed them regarding the sprigs and havn't heard back yet...

I got mine last week and the baffle was in the box, as ordered. Must have been an error on their part; I'm sure they will get it rectified. Customer service, for me anyway, was slow but once they got around to answering my emails, all was very well.

Might take some time getting a hold of them, but they will get back to you and take care of what's missing, I'm sure.
