Voter Knowledge Test
I was reading the Voter I.D. thread and was reminded of a subject I considered for a research paper a few years ago, requiring a "Voter Knowledge Test" in order to be able to vote. Essentially you would have to get a passing score on a simple, I repeat simple, knowledge test of the candidates. Passing score could be 50% so that you at least have to know what the person you are voting for wants to do.
People are always complaining that not enough people are voting and we need to get more voters voting! But I believe the opposite is true, we need less people voting. We need people who are educated on the issues and the candidates voting. We don't need a bunch of fools flocking to the polls and voting for people they know nothing about. This is not an attempt to discriminate against anyone except the stupid. I'm also expecting some hilarious video clips of people utterly failing at political knowledge questions. Game on

The problem with a knowledge test is that it would absolutely be used by the party in power to screen out otherwise legitimate voters from the other candidate's party. For instance, one question might be:
1. Barack Obama is a Muslim, true or false Someone who answered false would be screened out if the party in power in Congress today wrote the question. So no, a knowledge test would be a complete failure. |

Also a question like this would never be on the test. Questions would be simple political questions.

The fundamental problem (pun intended) is that introducing *any* method to "screen" otherwise legitimate voters for *any* reason will absolutely be used by either party to attempt to skew voting to their favor and/or against their opponents. It doesn't matter if it's a knowledge test, or a financial test (poll taxes) or a gender test (remember that it's only been the last century that women could vote at all) or a property ownership test, etc. The whole purpose of a test is to create an exclusionary class and reduce the number of votes cast, period. It serves no other purpose. As such, is would be considered a "Holy Grail" instrument to be used by political opponents. There's no way to prevent or avoid that use. |

How about we ask:
How many branches are there in our government? What are the three branches of our government? Who elects the Congress? Who was the first President of the United States? Who is the President of the United States today? Who is the vice-president of the United States today? |

In any case, any kind of test to determine voter eligibility like this would never get past a basic Constitutional challenge. |

I've always thought it would be a great idea to require some level of political knowledge before allowing a person to vote. Even if it was something like answering multiple choice questions instead of voting for a specific candidate.
But of course, there is no way something like this could pass, as it most likely would be seen as unconstitutional (and I would agree). |

Most might be an overestimation but then again, how many people can point to Iraq on a map?
