[visordown.com] - Police show fatal bike crash

Humberside Deputy Chief Constable David Griffin was present at the force's presentation of fatal crash images

POLICE were today establishing whether they told relatives of a motorcyclist killed in a crash before showing a safety conference film of the fatal impact.

Images of fatal crash scenes were shown by Humberside Police to journalists and motorcycle industry representatives yesterday at a safety conference in Department for Transport offices in London.

The conference was organised by the Motorcycle Industry Association and Association of Chief Police Officers, and attended by Humberside's Deputy Chief Constable David Griffin.

CCTV footage showed the moment a rider of a low-capacity motorcycle impacted with a car, suffering fatal injuries.

Photos were also shown of the aftermath of a crash in which two motorcyclists were killed colliding head-on.

Visordown asked Humberside Police yesterday whether permission from the riders' families had been obtained. At 5pm today, press officer James Cartwright said he had had a meeting with the inspector who made the presentation but would not say whether the meeting had established an answer to our question.

In 2007, then North Wales Chief Constable Richard Brunstrom was criticised by the Independent Police Complaints Commission for showing photos of a dead motorcyclist at a press briefing without telling his family.

Yesterday's conference examined evidence that increasing the number of motorcyclists on the road could improve their safety.
