What do Police ride on?

I was driving to school today and saw a cop on a bike, first thought was "am i going speed limit?".. so i keep on driving..
then he turned and i could have SWORN it said "Ninja" on the side of the bike..but maybe it was just my brain trying to convince myself it was a ninja, so i could be wrong.

So out of curiosity, anyone know what Bike(s) they normally ride? Like does it vary or something?

They ride all different types of bikes. CHP has a collection of BMW R1100RT's, R1150RT's, and they have a few R1200RT's. They also have a selection of Harleys. Many of the BMW's are getting quite old at this point, and BMW, Harley, and Honda (with their ST1300) have been pushing to get the new contract, but with the state's financial woes everything of that magnitude has been put on hold.

Local towns and counties buy all sorts of policebikes. Our own town here in California still has a collection of ancient Kawasaki KZ1000's (just like the old CHiPS bikes!), but they also have 2 new ST1300's. Some towns nearby have the R1200RT's, and over in the Redwood City area, the sheriffs office even has a few KLR's that have police colors on them. Buell has a police version of their Ulysses, and Yamaha has a police version of their FJR, but I haven't seen either of those in California as of yet.

All I've ever seen are Harley's! I think they might benefit in getting a tricked out ZX-14 or Hayabusa for those extreme high-speed chases!

Harleys in Daytona. They get them for cheap but have to give them back to the dealer after a year, who can then sell them for whatever they want.

With Harley losing money I'm not sure they will continue this deal. They might not be able to get the premium after the year.

I had a police Harley once. It was a great bike. Can you say heavy duty?

It depends on the department. It is usually up to the Sheriff/Chief/Commissioner along with advisors. As you can already see by the responses it varies wildly

My son and I got pulled over last year by a sheriff who had a Harley. I support the Sheriff's dept. financially (come on I have two boys) so I started talking to him about his bike. This guy was THE BIGGEST ASSHOLE. He pulled over 240 bikes (everyone that went by for a week) on this back road (Maytown Rd). He was proud of it and boasted about it. He hated the Harley and when I asked him what bike he owned he said none. He then told my son and I (my son was 15 at the time) that if we would have run he wouldn't have chased us (since the Harley was so slow). Nice way to encourage a kid to run from the cops next time.

We both beat the tickets in court.

This bike in on the "Tulsa" episode of Superbikes. They got it after a busted drug deal.

Yeah... but they were the ones that escorted us on the Hogs for Hokies ride, so it's cool! They were alot of fun. Had us going over 80mph down 460.. and they would still fly by to get to the front of the pack.

We rotate between Harley, BMW and Kawasaki. The new cop cars are unmarked Challengers. Soooo stealthy... The cop bikes tend to hide behind pillars or even other cop cars. Most of them are jerks. In fact, pretty much every cops I've encountered has been a jerk. There is alot of well documented abuse of power in Knoxville.

Had a younger guy (late 20's - early 30's) pull up next to me on a GSXR. I noticed he had a gun on his belt (open carry), and I think he MAY have had a BP vest on too, I don't remember seeing a riding jacket. Other than the gun and possible BP vest, he was not in uniform.

CCW/CWPs are near impossible to get in my county, so he had to have been a cop going to/from work, and this must have been his personal vehicle, as there were no police modifications or markings on his bike.

Mostly harley around here but I did saw a busa once and asked the officer about it. He told me it was from a drug bust and they decided to put it to good use.
A lot of unmarked chargers around here too.
Everytime I see one by my side I automatically look at my speedo.

You could be right Hybrid.... probably a cop on his personal bike coming/going to/from work that you coincidentally bumped into.
