Is the 600 mile service necessary?

Probably a stupid/noob question so forgive me for my ignorance, but it seems like it's mostly just the service folks inspecting things, which gives you peace of mind, but my local dealer wants $200+ for it. I'd rather just get the damn oil change done and call it a day. The oil change is $80...
Before anyone says anything, I don't have any knowledge of doing maintenance work on a motorcycle. I'd prefer not messing something up by doing it myself (at least for the time being), so I want to get it done by the dealership; however, I'm a full-time college student/part-time minimum wage earner/full-time dad, so money can be an issue at times. If I can avoid the 600 mile service check and just do the oil change, would that be good enough or is the 600 mile service completely necessary?
Thanks in advance for your quick responses. I'm going to try to get it done at the local dealer where I bought my bike if it ends up being completely necessary. If not, I'll save some major dough by just getting an oil change done.

It's required otherwise you'll void the warranty.

In addition to them checking cables, bolts, etc, they'll check valve clearances to ensure everything's seating properly.

A general rule of thumb is that if you can't afford the maintenance, you can't afford the bike.

I don't think they check valve clearances on the 600 mile.. I work on my own bikes but that's what I did at 600, changed the oil and oil filter.. cost $40 for full synthetic. By 600 I already had the bike apart 3 times for shimming and stuff so I knew everything was pretty tight ..LOL imo the 600 service is basically a oil change, or the most crucial part anyway.

You could have an independent motorcycle repair shop perform the service, which may cost less for you. Call around and get prices

I was under the impression that as long as you recorded all the things you did then NOT using a dealer wouldn't void the warranty. I'm speaking of just the standard 1 year warranty though. I was told to just keep record of everything, and receipts / invoices so you can prove the dates if need be.


With that being said, even the most unmechanically inclined should be able to "inspect" their bike. If you're not comfy with the oil change yourself have it done. Thats cool. But They're not gonna do anything more to it during the inspection. They'll give it a quick once over most likely and take your cash.

The dude saying "if you can't afford the maintenance you can't afford the bike". That is true. But being able to afford something and jsut not wanting ot piss the money that you do have away is a very different thing.

Oh, and $80 for an oil chang is rape...

Why should it cost that much more to change the oil in you bike than it does a car. The 250s hold 2 qrts of oil basically and a freaking $5-10 filter. I would urge anyone who has a bike to learn the basics like changing the oil. It may seem scary but you literally don't take any part off of the bike. You stick a pan under the body, reach under there and take one bolt out, the oil poors out, you then take the filter out by taking one more bolt loose, replace it the plug, and refill the oil. If you can take the dishes out of your dishwasher you can change your bikes oil... Don't be scurd!

It is understandable that you want to save a few bills, however at least make an attempt to learn and do a few things for yourself. Check the wiki, it has a wealth of info and instructions that you may find easy to do. http://www.ninjette.org/wiki/600_mile_service

Where in Socal are you? There's tons of us here and we can show you how to do the oil change. It takes less than an hour and should cost less than $30 depending on which oil you want.

If anyone here is willing to help me out, I'll ride over to your place so you don't have to use any gas, and if there's a local bike parts shop where we can buy some oil and an oil filter, I'll pay you $10 for gas on your bike for the cost of letting me follow you there and buy what I need.

Dude, I'd totally just do it yourself. Oil change is quick and easy. Then just go around and look at your cables, fluid levels and tire pressures. It's worth doing yourself but like others have said, oil change is the most important.

I'd help you out but i'm no where near that area.

Sorry, LA area is a little too far out to do an oil change. Tons of LA members here though, but a few hours notice probably is too short for them to respond especially on a work day.

All you need is a 17mm wrench to unbolt two bolts (and a pan to catch the oil).

Dude! c'mon, you don't need someone to hold your hand for an oil change! I promise, my grandma could change the oil on my motorcycle, it's easier than a car.

I don't know what happened to kkim but he had posted a lot of diy threads but now the pictures are gone

Here is another very detailed step by step, with pics and it lists everything you need to change the oil. You can save a lot of money by ordering the stuff and borrowing a socket wrench if you don't have one.

buddy you seriously need to rethink changing the oil by yourself...it is probably the most simple thing you can do...it requires undoing 2 bolts, putting in the new filter, and filling up the oil -.- $10 to do it yourself or $80 to have them do it

They cannot void your warrenty for not having Kawasaki do the maintenance. Its a violation of the Magneson-Moss Act. Provided your work was done correctly, with the correct parts....you are still covered by the warrenty.

Tighten all the brake bolts, suspension bolts, engine mount bolts and check the air in the tires with no nails and lights are all good. Clean the entire bike to inspect for loose bolts and lube the chain. Oil change too. Don't forget to use a real torque wrench. Also check all the controls and their proper adjustments.

I did it. Piece of cake.
I used Yellow Pages to hold the bike up straight. I know.. Ghetto, right? lol
It only took me a bit over an hour. Most of the time spent letting the oil drip.

Hell yeah, man. I'm nowhere near mechanically gifted, but this was probably the simplest thing I've ever tried, as far as doing my own mechanical work goes. Saved myself $180+ by just doing the work myself.

I feel that everyone who owns a motorcycle should at least know how to change the oil. A motorcycle is also a great platform to work on your mechanical capabilities if you have an extra vehicle, especially with all these DIY threads around. You just gotta jump in and realize that you're not that good yet and stuff probably will go wrong and take longer but wrenching things on your own feels so much better in the end and saves you a lot.

Done but not professionally. Went to the dealer and bought kawi oil and filter 28.00 got home and drained the oil and filter 1hr. Then opened the filter and realized the oring was not included. Called the dealer and the parts guy said not necessary to change on a 2011. Plus item was not in stock. Ok then I realized I need a replacement washer on the drain plug. Went to auto zone and bought a fiber washer. 3.00. Put in 1.8 quarts for good measure. No leaks

You don't check when it's running. Check after letting the bike sit for 5 -10min then hold it perpendicular _l_ to the floor and look at the window and check to see if between the 2 hash marks.

Nah, you'll be fine. Some people go 3 oil changes before changing them. As long as there not ripped or torn i couldn't imagine any problems

I noticed something peculiar about that the little glass by the right brake pedal that's supposed to tell you how much oil is in your bike...
When I did the oil change last night, went for a ride to make sure everything was fine, and then came back, the oil was noticeable through the glass... Today, I saw that the oil was below the "low" indicator. Should I do something about this? Will I have to put in a bit more oil to be safe?

FWIW, I put in 2 quarts. Decided to use both since it was regular oil (not synthetic) and I wouldn't put the .2 quarts to good use next time I do an oil change...

I don't have my Ninjette anymore, and so no owner's manual handy, but I'm pretty sure it took more than 2 qts. If it looks low, then add a bit, but don't overfill it.
