Get lost!

This is my last week of ownership for my GSX-R, so I had to go for a final long ride. I decided to do something that I really enjoy when I have the time... a "get lost" ride.

This is a ride with no agenda, no destination, no route, no maps, no GPS. You just follow your nose wherever it leads. Take a turn you've never taken before, explore an interesting-looking road, whatever. Just... go. Pick a direction and see what you discover.

Anyone else do this? I love the lack of structure. It's pure whim from start to finish.

I suppose this could be challenging for someone who doesn't have a decent sense of direction, or in a part of the country where you really can get thoroughly (and dangerously) lost. Since I live in the Northeast and in one of the smaller states at that, it's pretty much impossible to go too far without running into a major highway or something recognizable.

I do that all the time. I know every road in New England, most of Florida, the best ones on the east coast, most of southern IL, a lot of PA. That's what riding is all about.

Here in Louisiana there are a lot of “back” roads. It’s very easy to get lost but never dangerously lost. Most everyone is friendly so if you get lost someone will give you directions to the old Oak tree on the corner just past the only stop light that hasn’t worked in years. Make a right toward the bayou and that will lead you out of the Parish and to the main road.

I look forward to going on these kinds of rides once I'm up to it. I drive so much for my job that while I might end up somewhere unfamiliar, it wouldn't take to long for me to see something I recognize.

Did that (driving, didn't have a bike yet) when I lived in Minnesota and Montana. Get in the car, go some direction, see where it goes.

I do this quite often on Saturday mornings for a couple of hours before the rest of the family drags themselves out of bed. Typically I have a destination in mind, but not always. Even when I do have a destination I typically take another route back and "get lost" a bit on the way home. I have been in the area long enough that getting truly lost is impossible but it has been interesting to explore the countryside around where I live. I did the same thing where we lived when I was in High school with the old pickup I had back then. Its been a great way to get a little ME time.

This is what I do when I move to an unknown area. Great way to figure out where everything is or isn't.

My wife doesn't do stuff like this.

She often misses exits and gets turned around. Blames Waze a lot.

Common conversation when we're in the car together: "HOW long have you lived here?"

It’s called daydreaming. Her mind is elsewhere.

I never used to have any sense of direction, and navigating anyplace was something of a challenge. About age 22, I suddenly developed one. I have no idea how that happened. Lots of places here in L.A. I can navigate, even though I've never been there. I use the GPS in the car, though it's mostly to read street signs rather than navigating. I've looked at a map before leaving the house, so I know where I'm going.

By now the map in my head is fairly useful. Specifics aren't always available, I can't tell you necessarily each curve of a road, but when I'm out I can often tell where we need to go.

I used to have a terrible sense of direction as well until I started flying. No road signs lol so you have to use your compass and sense of direction.

I was always the type that couldn't find my way out of a paper bag until I started working for the maid company I'm at. It's weird though, Akron, I have no clue about even though I live here.We hardly do anything in my area. Everywhere else in NE Ohio, or even south like Canton, I'm golden lol.
