Return of the Carbs
I took out carbs little to no problems, cleaned it and attempted to reinstall. Turns out my airbox rubber ducts are basically hard as rocks-thats the fate of old rubber- and virtually impossible to reinstall to the carb. Tried boiling them, it worked for a sec then popped out. expletives were used.
Open to suggestions, but may buy new oem ones that are more malleable than my boulders. 2A29C0E8-111B-4F9D-887B-3CD2C7D0ED75.jpg Me yesterday wrestling with the ducts 😂 pic of the gunk in carbs A5F0CB24-2D7F-49C0-972D-34580D605962.jpg |

I was able to make my original boots work by doing the air box/battery box separation mod. Before that, the assembly kept pulling the carbs back off the boots every time I put them on.

Fairly certain there's a solution you can soak these in to soften them up easier.

Yes there IS way to restore oils back into rubber that have evaporated over time. You’ll need:
- bottle isopropyl alcohol +90% - small 4oz bottle Oil of Wintergreen (methyl salicylate) - small bottle glycerin - some empty glass jars (peanut butter, jam, etc) Pour into glass jar: 1-part Oil of Wintergreen 1-part glycerin 3-parts alcohol Stir well and drop in your rock-hard rubber part so it’s completely submerged. Screw jar lid on and let sit for 1-4 days depending upon hardness. Shake jar regularly if you see separation. Remove rubber and wipe off excess fluid. That’s it! Soft pliable rubber just like new!!! Note: use nitrile gloves to handle. Large doses of methyl salycilate can be poisonous. |

Danno's solution is probably more effective than mine, but I've used that cheapo silicone spray lube stuff that comes in an aerosol can with great success. Just put the parts in a Ziploc bag, blast it with the silicone stuff, enough to cover it, and soak it for maybe a weekend, maybe a week.
I'd also like to add that there are implications to using pod filters. It's a big long-standing, often not-so-civil debate about whether or not to use them. You can use the search function if you'd like to see all the moving parts of this discussion. I ride in the rain a lot, so that's reason enough for me to keep my airbox. |
