CCS Safety Wire Requirements
Please forgive my sudden lack of reading comprehension today. Am I overlooking something, or are the safety wire requirements for CCS pretty minimal?
Reading through threads like Rexbo's Ninja Race Prep (which isn't a CCS build), I was expecting a bit more in the CCS rules. Section 5.2.16 seems to be it; everything else lists alternative "acceptable means".

Standing by. Section 5 at your link looks just like the one I read, other than the Daytona 200 mentions, including the subsection I highlighted in the initial post.

Ah got ya now...
So "acceptable means"... for example, it is common to wire your oil fill cap. An "acceptable" alternative is to safety wire one end and clip the other through the cap. That way... to add oil you don't have to cut the safety wire. These clips are also used on wheel axles, ignition keys and cameras. Hose clamps are considered acceptable means as well. Commonly found on external oil filters and such. Now are they minimal? Naw... Your gunna want to wire the following items at the very least. Oil fill Oil drain Oil filter (hose clamp + wire or K&N with hole) Radiator cap (be very carefull with this) All brake caliper bolts Axles need the clips through the hole or wired Exhaust Can mount bolts should be wired Key should be tethered Cams should be tethered Transponders and lap times need to be tethered as well That should get you through tech pretty good.

Thanks again Chris. I still don't see how some of those items make the list based strictly on what's written in the rulebook, but I trust I'm better off wiring them anyway. Better to have it and not need it.

One way of looking at safety wiring is that it's a good indicator of whether or not you remembered to tighten a fastener. There's been many times that I've been working on my bike in the pits and someone comes up and says: " Hey Timm, you got a fragistaff modulator for a '99 GSXR in your box?" I get up and get the part and talk to the guy for a few minutes then sit back down..... "Now where was I?"
Getting distracted by others in the middle of doing an important task happens a lot. I try to never talk to someone when they are putting their helmet on. Why? Because I've gone out on the racetrack without my chin strap fastened. Even though it's ultimately our own responsibility, we still should be looking out for one another. I often look over other people's bikes in the pits for the same reason. |

CCS is pretty lack luster on the safety wire requirements. Oil drain, oil fill, oil filter, radiator cap, coolant drain and thats about it. WERA on the other hand, everthing that holds fluid and all brake hardware.

CCS, you only need to safety wire your oil drain, oil fill, oil filter. Everything else is optional.
