LED footpeg brackets (work in progress)

After seeing Freyedchicken's footpeg brackets i decided i'd make my own. I ordered some 3mm LED's of ebay and started drilling some holes. That was the easy part! Soldering all the tiny wires together is a PITA. Anyways here are some pictures of what i've done so far.

I have a couple lights that aren't working that i'll have to fix but once i install the brackets on the bike i'll post more pictures.

One thing I did on the backside was filled the backside of the peg mount with silicone. It covers up the LED leads and wiring. Plus if you use black silicone it looks really smooth.

Looks good so far.....are these used for turn signals or brake lights?

you could have the leds in series and use one resistor for that...put each series of leds in parallel to have less wiring...really clean up your circuit...
overall not bad result.

I planned on filling it with some epoxy but i like the sound of black silicone.

Yes they will be turn signals on the sides and brake lights in the rear. There is a video somewhere on youtube of someones completed brackets on the bike. I'll see if i can find it and i'll link or post it up.

Thanks eveyone for the comments. i hope to have them installed on the bike within the next week. check back soon for more pics

Those look great, does yours act like a tail light or also like a brake light?

The resistors are really small and with shrink-tubing over the soldered leads and resistor they're basically invisible. It's always wiser to run LED's in parallel as if any of the LED's burn out or a solder connection breaks loose you don't lose the whole circuit.

They're tiiiiny

Shrink tubed up...

That and if you're wiring up a bunch of LED's in series you have to pay special attention that you're wiring them in the correct direction. If you have one LED flipped backwards (which is easy to do as after you trim the leads it's tricky to distinguish the negative and positive sides). That and with a lot of LED's you start to require running multiple series IN parallel which really complicates things further I just don't believe in running LED's in series unless it's only a very few and there are issues like space to worry about.

Furthermore here's a good example of why I believe in running LED's in parallel:

Notice in the 2nd from the left row about 2/3 of the way up? There is ONE LED that had a bad solder connection (not bad out of 50 or so LED's). If I did wiring in series I would've had a bank of 5-6 LED's (not too bad, but still a PITA to locate the right one) that would all be out. If it was a bad LED and not just a bad connection then it'd be even MORE difficult to diagnose. I was able to find that one LED as it was the only one not illuminated and within 10 minutes:

They're all lit

To reduce the amount of current going through the LEDs, if they have too much current, then they will burn out, OTOH the more current they have the brighter the LEDs, so really it is a trade off on the life and how bright you want them. Though if you keep the current within the specs of the LED it will last a very long time.

It isn't that expensive to do it yourself but it is very time consuming. If you don't know much about wiring then i suggest you do buy a set from Freyedchicken.

Still working on the wiring and i'm hoping to have everything finished up in the next couple days.
