Never thought it would happen to me, but it did today
I thought I'd go for an early ride today before the monsoon rains hit this afternoon. So I'm going through Cassadaga (you know where the ex-circus and carnie people retire and tell fortunes and all that stuff) and I'm exploring roads I haven't been on. Sometimes you hit a good one, sometimes it's a dead end. This one was a dead end. I turn around and head back out to the main road and out of a driveway (on my left) comes this wild peacock. He doesn't look first or anything, just pulls right out in front of me. I saw him coming and hit the brakes but you never know what they are going to do. He turns left and starts heading the same direction as me. Now he is flying (he was just running when he pulled out of the driveway). I have him in my sights and I'm chasing him down and closing in quickly. He doing about 30MPH and his tail feathers are all tucked in and he is motoring. He thought I had slowed down but no, I'm right on his ass. After about 50 yards or so I slow and he ducks into a driveway on the right. It was pretty cool and I don't think he will try that move again. That will teach him to look before you pull out in to traffic.

I know it sounds strange but it happened. I've never even seen one fly. I wonder how they taste?

Well you don't hear a story like that every day. Glad you acted quickly and hit the brakes. If you hit him you might have gone down.

Rick, I just noticed I screwed up the title. You're supposed to tell me when I mess things up. I put "I" instead of "It" in the title.

Kerry, my brain only works now and then. Now wasn't one of those times. As a matter of fact it didn't work to well then either.

Actually, I don't think this ever has happened to anyone else, so you need to change the title before motorcycling has a new saying: "It's not IF a peacock tries to drag race you - it's WHEN."

We get wild turkeys in the road around here. I think if I had an incident with a peacock I might go check myself in for evaluation.

dude i freaking hate peacocks (though not as much as cows). not only are they freaking destructive as hell (for those who don't have wild peacocks where they live, peacocks eat your roof shingles like candy) but they also take over the roads (especially out towards osteen) those little bastards refuse to move half the time too. they just puff up and show you some feathers as if that's going to make you go away. stupid freaking birds...

used to ride the sandpit on a weeknight (so as not to get killed like on the weekends) then they outlawed it. used to ride Beatty's field down the road til GTech bought it and made world headquaters and Amgen put up 2 huge manufacturing buildings. now GTech moved to providence, Amgen closed 1 building, and what was once a great hidden mx track is now 2 huge empty buildings and 1 still in using building. Used to be a hare scramble in big river each year. now only mtn biking is allowed. Used to live near Arcadia park - more good illegal dirtbike riding - and they also can't get an enduro permit there anymore. our state govt at work. |

Around here we have lots and lots of sea gulls. I think that there's definately something in the water that gets into the fish that they eat, because the Kamikazi gene is in full effect. In the last 20 years, I've hit two with my truck, one with my car, and been hit a glancing blow against my helmet while riding. Any bird that gets into the way of a moving vehicle is fair game! I never knew that something that small had so many feathers!

I used to ride out of my driveway and up to Carrs Pond, cut through the pond, cross Hopkins Hill Rd and ride the Reservoir. They can only catch you when you load or unload your bike so I was pretty safe. I only had to watch for East Greenwich police and they were pretty cool if you live in EG.

Nice story. We don't have peacocks over here but in some areas there are a butt load of chickens, especially by my ex's house. They're ballsy little bastards. they just sit there and stare you down...like they're playing chicken! I can't count the number of times Ive ridden by and punted chickens out of the way. Don't want to choke any chickens in my chain!
