GPS Mount Solution with clipons
After I installed my clipons, I had those four extra allen bolts to use for a GPS mount. Here is a before picture:
I used sheet metal to make a bracket, painted it black, and put 3M Dual Lock (similar to Velcro, but stronger) on both the bracket and my GPS. Here are pics off the bike: And with it mounted on the bike: Lastly, I wired a power cable into the fuse box so the GPS only gets power when the key is turned to the 'on' position and also so the transformer on the power cable doesnt drain the battery. On Monday, I tested it on more than a 300 mile ride and it worked great. |

That looks great! So you don't have a problem with glare? My concern would be that I'd be looking down too much.

You have to buy a charging cable specifically for your Garmin. I can't remember the exact voltages, but they are different. I think some have added resisters to USB cables to make one.... but I found it much easier to purchase an aftermarket cable.
This link is to my post where I list the parts I used: http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showt...hlight=erector |

Awesome! Thanks for the fast reply! I have mine on my Zx10R with Ram center mount. I never thought of putting it in the front like that... since my shield is tinted anyways, I can't see through it..
Great, I am going to try this and excellent write up! Cheers! John |

I don't think I would want to trust my GPS to that velcro.

I've seen how solid that stuff is... I'd trust my firstborn to that Dual-Lock Velcro. IIRC Nick was literally starting to decompress the front forks a little (lifting the front end of the bike) pulling the GPS off, before he switched grips to press directly against the plate.

Nice mount BTW!
Painted black, maybe use some of that Rubberized or Plasti-Dip paint! Apply afew coats to buildup a nice Rust Free finish! Sheet metal like that will rust fast, even if painted good. In my EXP with using sheet metal for varies things in the past. Hey, maybe use some black "Rhino liner" or "Herculiner" used for pick up truck beds!!! |

Gonna revive this thread a little. I've been working on designing my own mount also. Only drew this up in Solidworks last night and then built a prototype part today at work. I only had a tape measure to get distances so it was off a little bit. My plan is to get the bracket made and then a recess machined into it where I can attach the smaller piece (possibly made from aluminum) and I can then slide my Motorola Droid Car Dock into it.
I'm not sure why those last two pictures are so big. I resized them in Photobucket and replaced the originals. |

Sad to say it was stillborn, I think it would've been a rather good idea to market.
That said, any chance you've still got prints that are distributable? Been debating making one of these out of sheet metal the way nick originally did, but not keen on doing all the measurements/prototyping myself if someone else has already got a working design. Perhaps lazy, but I prefer to think of it as time-conservative

BEFORE MAKING THIS PLEASE READ;
The only thing is with the bracket that attaches to the forks, the spacing may need to be fixed between the holes in the triple tree. I noticed the one I made in the prototyping machine didn't fit quite right. You might want to recheck those dimensions, I don't remember if I ever updated the model and drawing. |

Making one of these really isn't that hard. I used some posterboard to prototype so I could bend and cut it into any shape. Once I found what I wanted, I flattened the posterboard and traced it onto the sheet metal. Then, I just cut sheet metal with tin snips and bent it with a vice and hammer to get straight 90 degree angles. Finally, a little sand and flat black paint and it was done.
As for the concerns of the dual lock, I'm more afraid my GPS will break before this thing falls off in general riding. Even further, I took a spill with this and it didnt budge at all. |

unfortunately not all of our members are mechanically inclined, so I'm trying to find a shop that could make them for a decent price. That way if members wanted one, they could pm me and I could have the shop make one for them, then ship it to the member.
