Street fighter / naked bike / Rat bike / cafe racer build - suggestions welcome!

I enjoy reading other's build threads, and all of the great advice. So, I thought thatI would document my build - and seek advice...

I'm starting with a complete 94 EX250 - with lots of issues. The engine turns, but won't start ( carb issues? ). I have a donor frame / engine / harness from a 95 - that does run - so I will just swap out the motor for now.

I have an overall direction for the build, but welcome suggestions. I don't plan to use any fairings, would like to cut the rear off and add a hoop or something for the seat. And, above all else, keep the cost down - around $300 for the parts that I MUST purchase.

At the moment, it is torn down to the frame.

I have lots of spares from my first EX250, which I still have and will keep. I just wanted to build something of my own.

Inspirational builds...

How I obtained it. Flat, dry rotted tires; bent handlebars; suspension shot ( front and rear ); missing lots of bolts / screws; lots of broken plastics - it all needs to go!

Current status. Stripped to the frame. Spare wheels added ( tires are good ). I plan to paint all of it different colors.

Frame and wheels - dark red / cranberry
Tank and swing arm - light grey

For now, the purple wheels match the stripes on the tank dead on!

suspension

I rebuilt the front forks, just by replacing the seals, and fork oil ( about $35 total, and a few hours work ). They are MUCH better now. Previuosly, they would bottom out just by hopping on the bike and applying a little down force. Now, even though I did not upgrade the springs, they actually do their job

As for the rear shock, I am trying a GSXR shock, wich requres a little modification. On my other EX250, I just swapped in a 2008+ rear shock and it was a huge improvement - no mods required; it just bolts right in. I'll see if the GSXR is worth the added tweaking.

Someone else also liked the idea of painting the frame dark red.

Thanks. That was some great info. I'm unsure if I will put that much effort into the porportions of the build, but great to know!

I messed around with the parts that I have on hand, thinking that I should confirm that this will be a fully functioning bike and one that can be registered ( I have the title to it, so it should be. ). I am realizing that $300 will not buy the goodies to do this up the way that I want, so I might have to postpone that idea. It is slowly morphing into a "rat" bike - at least for now.

I once heard a TV car show host say, "There is no better way to save money than not to spend it".

Here is what I have at the moment ( again, this is only temporary ). I have lots of spare parts to throw at this.

Get it running and sell off "spares" and upgrade with the funds. Most of the times I have saved my spares, i never use them.

Nice to see my old bike is inspiring people. My inspiration came from this bike...

Not sure who's bike that is but I think it was somebody on this forum.

I sold my ninja before I got to do this to mine. I was a little scared of putting on pod filters but it's needed to get that cafe type look.

If you have any questions about my bike just ask.

@ crazymadbastard - I will try, but have not had much luck attempting to sell off parts in the past. I really don't want to deal with shipping some of the fragile parts. Also, as soon I sell / trash something, that's when I need it! lol

@ Jono - I'm glad that I used one of your creations for part of my inspiration. I saw that other bike as well.

I have a question to you all. The fuel tank has a few rust "chunks" in it. I can hear them rolling around, but can't get them to exit the tank! I have fished around in there with a magnet, but no luck. I have removed the petcock, and fuel door. Any suggestions?

There isn't all that much surface rust in the tank, so I might just use the vinegar method for rust removal. Perhaps even throw in a chain for agitation - as long as I can fish it out when done.

I ordered a couple of things. The more that I look at the front end, the more I know that it doesn't look right.

New headlights, and levers are on their way.

I want to go with round guages as well. There are so many to choose from in chrome, but not so many in black - which is what I want.

I ordered a few more parts. The turn siganals were only $7.50 shipped - for all 4

I am trying to figure out what Speedometer to order. What ratio do I need for a mechanical replacement, where I can just screw in my existing cable?

Buy the trail tech vapor. Look at my build thread as I installed one. Only have 4 wires to hook up, very easy install.

I know. Many people recommend that set up. What model # is recommended though? The EXseries is not listed on their website.

What, exactly, is that plastic mount that you used? It looks easy enough to use.

This is the write up that I followed and also asked Chicago Bob a few questions along the way. I can explain it to you if you have any questions that are not answered in this write up.

https://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=129394

The mount I used is a mount that comes with the kit. It is one of the handlebar mounts. Some people may not like it because it is not as clean as a cafe/streetfighter but it is cheap. Any questions please ask.

I decided to try this first, for my speedometer. I don't really need all the bells and whistles of the Vapor, and can live without a tach.

Benefits:
$14 shipped
Speedometer
odometer
backlight
battery operated ( cheap batteries )
auto on/off
clock
adjustable for tire size

I'll post results once it arrives and is installed.

I have not had any time to work on the project. Parts have been arriving. The bicycle speedometer arrived scuffed up, and I read in the fine print that the speed would flash above 20 MPH. Also, it was much smaller than I expected. So, I did not even try it out, and returned it.

After nearly a year, new direction

This build has languished for nearly a year. I am now ready to complete it, but in a different direction...
