What is the best way to straighten a bent shifter?

the part with the little rubber boot is slightly bent outwards. What is the best way to bring it back in a bit so its more like an upside down "L" rather then like a "Y" minus the right foot, if you get what I mean... I can't seem to get enough leverage on it to hammer it in.

When I damaged mine after a fall, I couldn't for the life of me hammer it back out so I took the easy way out and went to a local metal works shop and had them bend it back for me at no cost It's so simple for them, I would be surprised if they charged you. good luck.

If you have a vice, acetylene torch, and a pipe (maybe even vice grips) I would clamp the lever in a vice, get the bent portion hot, then use the pipe (or grips) to bend it back.

It's best to remove the shifter to bend it back, then use a vice to bend it, but if you don't have one you can use a combo wrench for leverage. I've done it twice (I am that cool ) without problem. If you don't have a combination wrench, anything similar with a hole in the end should work, like the back end of a larger crescent wrench.

It's made of steel, so it can be cold worked a lot before it breaks. Aluminum is a world of hurt for cold working, so don't do this to aftermarket rearsets! You will, however, chip your paint, so it's a good idea to spray paint it to prevent corrosion.

remove shifter
put shifter in long bar
put another long bar around the other side of the shifter
apply force
reinstall shifter

alternative:
spend $15 on a new lever

It'll be weaker but it's nothing integral to the bike and won't put your life in danger.

I ended up breaking my small 3" vise trying to bend my back straight-ish. This is the second time bending it straight. The first time I took the shifter off and hammered it straight when I lowsided at the track.

This second time it was curled up from my spill at the track parking lot.....
I took the shifter out, pulled the rubber shifter pad off, clamped shifter in vise, just a deep socket over shifter with a long socket extension as a breaker bar for leverage and bend it straight. You'll have to position the shifter in the vise so that the edge of the vise is at the bend so you're actually bending the curve straight instead of making more bends.

Bent mine back four times while on the bike with a wrench like leed suggested. Just sharpied in the spots that lost their paint.
